If you like Bertie and Jeeves, this is one of the best! As I listened to the book, I kept chuckling and laughing to the point where people wondered what I was doing! Bertie gets himself tangled up in two or three different twists, all of which center around an antique cow creamer that most of his relatives and aquaintences seem to covet. As usual, Jeeves comes to his rescue just as things are hopeless..
At this point Dirk Pitt, the main character of Cussler's books, is getting a little long in the tooth but it is fun to fall into his world of adventure and suspend belief for an afternoon.
Is there an Atlantis? Only Dirk could find it, probably by diving all by himself and holding his breath the whole time! He reminds me of the guys from the old movies whose hats never fell off while fighting. Hey but who cares? The story is fun, regular characters in full force and once again the world is safe!
Having read all of the Alex Cross books to date, it seems as if even the main character, Alex, is getting weary of the repetativeness of the plots.
Once again, this is part two of a serialized story, big bad guys involved, some romance but predicatable (Alex can never settle down and besides all his girlfriends get either kidnapped or killed). The main story was a bit unbelievable concerning a megalomaniac who wants total global destruction for reasons that are never fully explained.
The narrator was good but that does not overcome the story.
Well, if you are looking for something fast paced with everything tied up neatly at the end, this may not be for you. BUT if you are the type of reader who savors a good book like the ultimate good meal well here it is! i.e. this is more like a European dinner vs American fast food.
The main character is not Edgar Allen Poe, but his school teacher and to keep you in the mind of the character, is written in first person. We are introduced to him just as he believes he will be poor for the rest of his life, but then comes into a small inheritance. As he enters the life of a school teacher he meets a mysterious women who captivates him..problem though, she's married and stations above him. Well..that all changes when her husband is found murdered and the finger points towards our protagonist!
Extremely well written and a great story with character development.
I have read all of John Grisham's books and a only a few have been disappointing..well this is not one of them. The main character is extremely well written and one wonders if Grisham based it on someone he knew. The setting is Italy with all the color and flavor one can imagine.
We follow the main character as he tries not only to outwit the CIA but also to stay alive when all parties concerned wish him dead. Like the character in "The Street Lawyer" this guy is out on a limb and everyone he meets has a saw in their hands!
Very fast paced and entertaining.
This is one of the best of Bertie and Jeeves! All the regular nuts are present and waiting to become a bit more cracked..Gussie, Madeline and the gang get all mixed up with who is marrying who. As usual Jeeves is in the background making sure Bertie stays single while fixing all the rest.
I listen to the Jeeves series while gardening and at times I laughed out loud..I am sure the neighbors think I'm nuts too!
This is a great listen for those long airline rides as long as you don't mind people staring at you when you burst out laughing.
Maybe it's because I am female, maybe because I have a medical background but I was profoundly dissapointed with this book. The characters are predictable and cardboard, especially the female lead. Once again we are treated to a woman with a supposed higher intellect (a PhD)who has no common sense, and who behaves throughout most of the book like a bimbo. Sound familiar? Remember the character Laura Dern played in Jurassic Park?..ditto.
The medical scenerio was difficult to swallow, in that it was poorly contrived and not too well written. The former "Dr" Cook needs to stay away from this area as he has been out of the profession since the 1970's and it shows. The ending was laughable!
Don't waste your money here! There are many other writers in mystery and thrillers who are far better than this...
