Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Pirriwee Public's annual school Trivia Night has ended in a shocking riot. One parent is dead. The school principal is horrified. As police investigate what appears to have been a tragic accident, signs begin to indicate that this devastating death might have been cold-blooded murder. In this thought-provoking novel, number-one New York Times best-selling author Liane Moriarty deftly explores the reality of parenting and playground politics, ex-husbands and ex-wives, and fractured families.

Hits the major points for me... Entertaining, kept me glued to the story, satisfied with the ending and sad when it ended.
The narrators accent took me about 30 min to get into but once I did I thought she did an awesome job!

A Signature Performance: Elijah Wood becomes the first narrator to bring a youthful voice and energy to the story, perhaps making it the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent.

Classic tale, classic author. Loved revisiting this book - as read by Elijah Wood.
It is a story of friendship, adventure, racism, equal rights, family disfunction and abuse.
I found myself surprised by the insight and compassion that Twain brought out - with regards to these issues - especially for the time and era it was written in.
I highly recommend listening to it... Sort of a step back in childhood - reminiscent of my 6th grade teacher reading aloud during class.

Imagine that your husband wrote you a letter, to be opened after his death. Imagine, too, that the letter contains his deepest, darkest secret - something with the potential to destroy not just the life you built together, but the lives of others as well. Imagine, then, that you stumble across that letter while your husband is still very much alive....

The tale of lives that are going through their own trials, pain, and drama. Semi believable...and totally entertaining. I loved the character of the Tupperware selling mom. This story does make you think... Where would you draw the line of integrity when it comes to protecting your children or those you love.

The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

So... I have heard much of the controversy about this book (does it deserve the Pulitzer - is it brilliant?) ... A friend of mine loved it / my daughter, who's BS degree is in Art History, did not. I started into this substantially sized book with a skeptical eye (or ear as the case may be). I loved it! The story kept my busy brain - busy, entertained, engaged and invested in the outcome. I was secretly panicked that the ending would be a let down after enjoying the book. It was not. It didn't end with a big finish - just a nice thoughtful wind down that left me completely satisfied and not disappointed or wanting. The one drawback to listening to this book is that there were so many beautifully written lines, I would have loved to have read them with my eyes and marked up a book with favorite passages. However... While listening to the book - It did get me through cleaning out my garage and my basement. Priceless!

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: his sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

This book kept me engaged and interested. However, it fell a little flat at the end for me. It turned into your typical "who done it". It was good, I just wanted more pizaz.
I liked both of the main characters enough that if there were a follow book with these two (and they seem to leave that possibility wide open) I would probably buy it - in hopes that it had that extra something - to make it a 5 star.

    Story

Let me start by saying I have never seen the movie, but hear it is quite good - so I don't know how the 2 compare. I have had this book for quite a while and mostly bought it based on the Audible reviews. I did drag my feet reading it because part of the story revolves around 9-11 and I just didn't want to read a depressing book. The story is about a family and its history for generations, not just the 9-11 event (so don't let that stop you from reading it).The story starts from the perspective of a small boy, Oscar. I loved his voice or inner dialog. It reminded me of The Power of One (an all time favorite book of mine). The book then jumps around with different chapters being told through the voice of different characters. It was a bit confusing at first but it eventually all starts to pull together. I ended up actually loving this book. the book didn't depress me but it definitely gave my heart strings a good yank.

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

I don't know how you can't make the comparison - teen book - kids being divided into different groups at a certain age of development to live with there district (so to speak) - evil adult leaders - teen romance.... The list keeps going.
At first it held my interest pretty good but in the end, it turns into a sappy teen romance.
Just starting the second book. Hoping it sticks with a little more action and less sappy romance ( I do mean sappy - not the good kind).

The four fires in this story are passion, religion, warfare, and fire itself. While there are many more fires that drive the human spirit, love being perhaps the brightest flame of all, it is these four that have moulded us most as Australian people. The four fires give us our sense of place and, for better or for worse, shape our national character.

Bryce is up to his usual. I love Bryce and he has been a favorite author of mine - RIP.
If you like his style you will get more of the same formula. IE: Familiar phrases, family stories, characters you will care about, rich history, and always a few boxing references.
Otherwise you might get tired of the same old same old. However, I see his books as familiar friends that keep me company. Can't wait to read his last book- it was published a few weeks before his passing this year.
