When farmers cutting turf in an Irish peat bog make a grisly discovery, the perfectly intact body of a young woman with long red hair, archaeologist Cormac O'Callaghan and pathologist Nora Gavin are thrown together by their shared scientific interest in human remains. Because of the preservative effect of the bog, it is difficult to tell whether the body has lain there for two decades, two centuries, or two millennia.

This book was very enjoyable. The narrator was very good. Maybe the ending was a bit too neat, but a good listen all in all.

Orphaned while onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the master's illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin. Eventually, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, where the master is absent and the mistress battles opium addiction.

    "Great listen"
    Overall

I loved this book and became very attached to many of the characters. The author certainly did her homework. My only thought is that the ending seemed a bit contrived and almost too simple to fit the incredible plot sequence. Still, I very much recommend it and think it would be a great companion piece to "The Help" in a book discussion group.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

This is probably my favorite audio book yet. The story is very moving and the narration is top notch. My only complaint is that I didn't want it to end...

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

    "Don't miss this one"
    Overall

This was one of the best books I've ever read/listened to. I have a whole new respect and curiosity for the people and culture of Afghanistan. The author did an outstanding job of narrating and I enjoyed hearing Afghan terms in their proper pronunciation. I can't wait to hear more from Mr. Hosseini.

Mattie Gokey has a word for everything. She collects words, stores them up as a way of fending off the hard truths of her life, the truths that she can't write down in stories.

I loved this book. It has enough mystery and intrigue to keep the adult listenter interested, but is also suitable for the younger listener as well. Highly enjoyable.

    Overall

I'm a new fan of both Cornelia Funke and Brendan Fraser. This is a really fun book, suitable for adults and kids alike, so it's great for family road trips.
Brendan Fraser is absolutely fabulous as narrator. He has a different voice and accent for each character, and they're all great!

  • Eragon: The Inheritance Cycle, Book 1

When Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy; perhaps it will buy his family meat for the winter. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself.

    "Enjoyed this one!"
    Overall

My teenage son and I both enjoyed Eragon. Although fairly long (about 16 hours total), the storyline managed to keep our interest throughout. I was a bit confused for awhile as to exactly who the Varden were, but that may have just been me.
This entire book is obviously laying the groundwork for the next installment. The ending was not an ending at all, but rather an opening to the next book, which has not even been published yet.
Maybe not as "mature" a work as Tolkien or Brooks, but still an epic fantasy well worth your while.
We'll be downloading Eldest when it comes out!
