"When killing people is your job, there’s no such thing as a vacation. Then again, how often does an assassin live long enough to enjoy her retirement? In this line of work, you either get lucky or you get dead. And since I destroyed my nemesis, Mab Monroe, a few weeks ago, all of Ashland’s lowlifes are gunning to make a name for themselves by taking out the lethal Spider—me, Gin Blanco."

Words/phrases I would be happy to NEVER hear again...silverstone knives (by book SIX we know her knives are silverstone AND what silverstone is!), goth dwarf (yes, Sophia is "goth"...I don't need that beaten into my head repeatedly), little white pills (for the love of god this one is RIDUCULOUS...enough said), my lover (yep, we get it, you and Owen are lovers...thanks for the repeated reminder. Ugh.) ...I could go on and on...

Note to the author: Its safe to assume your readers have a memory! I found myself fast forwarding through much of the repetitive nonsense in this book and am really questioning whether or not I want to continue. If you plan to continue this series, there must be less filler and more substance. If I continue this series, its safe to say I've been turned off of trying another by the same author which is unfortunate because the plot is new and fresh and I would expect the same from another series, just can't handle the repetition.

And to give the author a little leeway...editing anyone?!?

When mild-mannered Casey Schwartz wakes up in jail, she has no memory of how she got there. But after her sister Wanda bails her out, Casey has more to deal with than a foggy memory - like abrupt mood swings and fireballs shooting from her fingertips. But things really head south when a vampire shows up on her doorstep.

I really wanted to like this series. The premise is fun and lighthearted. Prefect for when you're looking for some fluff. Unfortunately, I had to force myself through the third book, fast forwarding a lot and not missing a thing. Also, while pretty much all books in this genre have a "romantic" element, the scenes in this series fall way short of romantic and land squarely in the raunchy category. Again, after boring my way through one scene I fast forwarded through every other one in the series and missed nothing.

It's a lousy first day on the job for Nina Blackman. A patient, loopy from the anesthesia, bites her. At least he was cute. The next morning, Nina wakes up with a set of razor-sharp fangs, bionic vision, supersonic hearing, and a taste for blood. But there's a good explanation: It's her patient, Long Island vampire Greg Statleon. Is Nina willing to commit to one man for eternity, even if they are perfect for each other?

I'm only halfway through this book and if it had been the first in the series I would have stopped already. The storyline is ok. Based on the first installment it's what I expected. But the narrators performance of the Greg character...I actually thought it was a part of the joke initially. Like another character's imitation of him. Based on this performance I will always screen other books with this narrator in the future.

When Nina Linden is hired to landscape a private island off the New England coast, she sees it as her chance to rebuild her failing business after being cheated by her unscrupulous ex. She never expects that her new client, software mogul Deacon Whitney, would see more in her than just a talented gardener. Deacon has paid top dollar to the crews he’s hired to renovate the desolate Whitney estate - he had to, because the bumps, thumps, and unexplained sightings of ghostly figures in 19th-century dress are driving workers away faster than he can say “Boo.”

I have enjoyed all of Molly Harper's books and enjoyed this one as well. Maybe she has just set my expectations too high. I found myself wishing there had been more of what I consider Harper's trademark wit and snark. That said, I'd recommend this book again and again.

Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

I'm about 3/4 of the way through and am underwhelmed. There is a decent if not new idea for a mystery there but it's poorly executed and so bogged down in needless details that I find my thoughts wandering to the point that I have to go back over what I've already heard. I've been hoping that we are building up to a real blockbuster ending, but that hope is fading.

Overall this whole J.K. Rowling in disguise bit feels like a gimmick. If the author really wanted an unbiased experience, she wouldn't have told her "secret" in which case I'm sure I would have never heard of this book.

Nola Leary would have been content to stay in Kilcairy, Ireland, healing villagers at her family’s clinic with a mix of magic and modern medicine. But a series of ill-timed omens and a deathbed promise to her grandmother have sent her on a quest to Half-Moon Hollow, Kentucky, to secure her family’s magical potency for the next generation. Her supernatural task? To unearth four artifacts hidden by her grandfather before a rival magical family beats her to it. Complication One: The artifacts are lost somewhere in vampire Jane Jameson’s occult bookshop. Complication Two: Her new neighbor, Jed Trudeau, keeps turning up half-naked at the strangest times....

First and foremost, I LOVE Molly Harper's books. I have listened to all of them in the audiobook format and until now have never been disappointed. I am very sad to say that the narration so is poor that I find myself distracted from the great writing. Until now I have really enjoyed Amanda Ronconi's work. However, the Boston accent is so bad in this recording that at first I actually thought it was a joke and part of the storyline. The narrator will read an entire passage with no accent whatsoever and then throw in one or two of the well-known cliche Boston accent words (pahk the caah, etc.). When she does this I'm a instantly snapped out of the story and focused on the strange accent.

While I agree a series should stick with the same narrator whenever possible, if the author felt the Boston accent was too important to the story to lose (I haven't finished the book, but at this point that doesn't seem to be the case) a different narrator would have been a better choice.

I always anxiously await Molly Harper's work and will continue to do so. I hope any future new accents are fully vetted before recording begins. Harper's books deserve the best possible narration and unfortunately this one misses the mark.

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

Would you try another book from Kate Morton and/or Caroline Lee?

Probably not. This one was too long and bogged down with needless details. I found myself checking to see how long was left because I was bored. I wouldn't want to waste my time again.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The twist scene, but unfortunately I knew it was coming.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The ending was good but after such a long build up it was predictable.

    Any additional comments?

This book probably would have been good if it had been half as long. It was just way to bogged down and slow moving. I never listen to abridged versions of books because I generally feel so much is lost when the details are cut out. This one would likely be MUCH better abridged. I wanted to like it, but unfortunately found myself bored overall.
