I got this one on sale and I figured it would fair at best (as most of the sale books are). But it was pretty good, especially the ending. Usually everything ends all wrapped up as neat as can be. I like that this seemed more realistic. Very hot sex scenes and the chemistry between the 2 main characters was excellent.
On the negative side--the narrator was little too sexy, she almost growled every line. I like her voice but she overdid it a bit.

Despite the fact the book started off with one massive info-dump after another I hung in there and waited it out. About 1/4 to 1/2 way through BAM...this book got so good. It was such a different romance. I know that flawed hero's are the "thing" right now, but this guy is more than flawed---he's completely wicked, but somehow the author managed to make me empathize with his life. He's the worst and best hero ever, and even though I have absolutely no knowledge of international arms trafficking or European organized crime rings, I felt like everything that happened was so realistic. The Heroine (Chloe) reacted just as you'd expect (most of the time). Sure, she might not be thinking of sex after she'd just been tortured, but it is a romance book---so you have to expect some of that type of thing. My only objection is that it ended too soon. I SOOOO wanted an epilogue. We deserved to know what happened after the final page! :)

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, if they like the hot, steamy sex scenes. The narrator is the absolute best, he makes the book! I love how Emma Chase writes, so funny and down to earth at the same time. The story of a rich, hot playboy type being brought to his knee's by a strong, successful, woman just isin't told enough for my taste. I love listening to Drew's thoughts and in romance you usually hear the woman's point of view so this is refreshing.

What about Sebastian York’s performance did you like?

He has a damn sexy voice...it fits the character perfectly!

    Any additional comments?

Just get this book..it really is a great erotic romance--It has equal parts of both of those things and the writer is clever and easy to read. I actually am considering listening to it again and I NEVER do that.

Gwyneth Shepherd's sophisticated, beautiful cousin Charlotte has been prepared her entire life for traveling through time. But unexpectedly, it is Gwyneth who, in the middle of class, takes a sudden spin to a different era! Gwyneth must now unearth the mystery of why her mother would lie about her birth date to ward off suspicion about her ability, brush up on her history, and work with Gideon, the time traveler from a similarly gifted family that passes the gene through its male line, and whose presence becomes, in time, less insufferable and more essential.

This is a unique YA story about time-travel and other abilities that haven't truly been revealed yet. Anyone who has read my previous reviews knows that I dislike a weak/meek heroine...woman who let guys tell them what to do and end of loving them for it-UGH. Gwyneth is a little bit of a wuss, but she's so likeable and so young that you can just tell that she'll grow up over the course of the next few books, so it doesn't bother me as much. She has this Bridget Jones Diary thing going on and it's very endearing and fun. I found a German movie of this book on youtube and it was really pretty good--if you like the book go check it out!

Although I don't know much about ex-military/international security jobs, this seemed realistic to me. I've read other version of this sub-genre and many times they seem a little hokey. The hero was smart and a little damaged, with a heart of gold, and the heroine was fairly strong and independent. There were a few twists I didn't see coming and great sex scenes, so all and all this was pretty good.

I read this about a week ago and I can hardly remember what it was about. I do remember thinking that it was boring and silly. Oh yeah, I remember... the hero falls in love with the heroine after about 10 minutes of knowing her. And, not just "oh, I'm attracted to her, love at first site" kind of thing. But the "I'll give my life and the life of the members of my family" kind. It's just really far fetched and unbelievable and that's saying something because I'm a big fantasy/sci fi romance fan.

This book was recommended because I read (and loved) Outlander. It is truly in the same vain...even mentioning Claire, or the white witch as she's known. I'm glad I decided to download it. It was really great--I wish I could figure out how an author can make you care so much about the characters. At times, I wanted to scream at them, or other times I was literally crying. The narrator was great, exactly right. It did get a bit long, I kept thinking, when will they get their happy ending?! If you like historical romance, this is an excellent choice. I haven't read the next in the series yet--I'm going to wait and savor them.

The time has come for one winner to be crowned. When she was chosen to compete in the Selection, America never dreamed she would find herself anywhere close to the crown - or to Prince Maxon's heart. But as the end of the competition approaches, and the threats outside the palace walls grow more vicious, America realizes just how much she stands to lose - and how hard she'll have to fight for the future she wants.

Would you listen to The One again? Why?

    No, who would?

Would you recommend The One to your friends? Why or why not?

No and I've already told my daughter that she doesn't need to read this one.

Which character – as performed by Amy Rubinate – was your favorite?

Maybe the rebel girl, at least she was actually strong.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes...disgust. I bought the first book and thought it was fun, so I bought the next 2 right away. Half way through the 2nd book, I realized that I'd made a huge mistake. I decided to read the last book just to see if the America or Maxon redeemed themselves....they didn’t. The themes in the book appeared to be Obedience- Submission and Subservience particularly in woman. I kept waiting for America to stand up for herself, to tell Maxon to take a hike especially when he’d speak to her like she was his possession… for the record girls, that is NOT romance that’s what a weak, chauvinistic hypocrite sounds like and if any guy talks to you like that dump him!

    Any additional comments?

Please don't let your teens read this---it's the bachelor for young girls and the adult version is bad enough!

The selection began with 35 girls. Now, with the group narrowed down to the Elite, the competition to win Prince Maxon's love is fiercer than ever. The closer America gets to the crown, the more she struggles to figure out where her heart truly lies. Each moment she spends with Maxon is like a fairy tale, filled with breathless, glittering romance. But whenever she sees her first love, Aspen, standing guard, she's swept up in longing for the life they'd planned to share.

What did you love best about The Elite?

The kernel of the story is what I liked…the idea that this girl from a lower cast could become powerful and that she would change history. I loved the first one, and this one started great. But hell, what happened to America? I keep asking myself why I’m reading a book where the lesson seems to be “Be quite, let men walk all over you, don’t think for yourself….and oh, maybe put out a little too and you’ll get the guy.” How can anyone think Maxon is any kind of hero, he such a misogynistic egomaniac. No one seems to question the fact that it’s okay for him to run around making out (or worse) with anyone he wants, but if any of the girls even considers another she’s whipped (or worse). There is absolutely nothing romantic about the relationship between these two….why would America choose this jerk? I already purchased the 3rd book so I can’t decide if I should go ahead and listen to it and hope and pray that Kiera Cass wouldn’t let this book end with America marrying Maxon. Please….tell me that America goes on to lead the rebels to victory and either she ends up with Aspen or she finds someone in the rebel camp even better. If she does end up with Maxon, I’m really sad that young girls out there are reading this crap and think that it’s okay to let anyone treat you like this.

I realize the guy thought his wife was using him in some way, but still he treated her like crap for so long and in so many horrible ways that I could never forgive him, and I couldn't forgive her for being such a doormat. Do people really carry around resentment like this and never say anything? Seems unrealistic. Nonetheless, even when the husband finds out that his wife married him for the right reasons he is still an ass and his excuses don't make it better. I can't believe people think this is romantic.
