  • My Planet: Finding Humor in the Oddest Places

Follow New York Times best-selling author Mary Roach - but be careful not to trip - as she weaves through personal anecdotes and everyday musings riddled with her uncanny wit and amazingly analytical eye. These essays, which found a well-deserved home within the pages of Reader's Digest as the column "My Planet," detail the inner workings of hypochondriacs, hoarders, and compulsive cheapskates. (Did we mention neurotic interior designers and professional list makers?) For Roach, humor is hidden in the most unlikely places, which means that nothing is off limits.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

    The narrator

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The way she would draw out the vowels in words. I couldn't finish this book because the narrator was too distracting.

    Any additional comments?

I loved Mary Roach's other books. I'm sure this one is very good as well but I couldn't get past the first few chapters.

Author James Hollis' eloquent reading provides the listener with an accessible and yet profound understanding of a universal condition - or what is commonly referred to as the mid-life crisis. The book shows how we may travel this Middle Passage consciously, thereby rendering our lives more meaningful and the second half of life immeasurably richer.

Kathleen says: "Where would we be without Hollis?"
    "Surprisingly, I really enjoyed this"

What did you like best about this story?

I bought this book because it was one of the recommended (and on sale). I wasn't that interested in the subject but I thought it could have some insight into aging. I ended up learning a great deal about the psychology of entering middle age and the explanation of why we behave the way we do. (of course, I don't do the things it says, but i know many people that do ;))

What insight do you think you’ll apply from The Middle Passage?

I'm not going to blame others for not living my life. I'll just go out and do it!

Book store nation, in the history of mankind there has never been a greater country than America. You could say we're the number one nation at being the best at greatness. But as perfect as America is in every single way, America is broken! And we can't exchange it because we're 236 years past the 30-day return window. Look around - we don't make anything anymore, we've mortgaged our future to China, and the Apologist-in-Chief goes on world tours just to bow before foreign leaders.

This is in keeping with his humor and style. I enjoy his 1/2 hour show but a book is a little too much of the same thing for me.

Official Book Club Selection is Kathy Griffin unplugged, uncensored, and unafraid to dish about what really happens on the road, away from the cameras, and at the star party after the show. (It's also her big chance to score that coveted book club endorsement she's always wanted. Are you there, Oprah? It's me, Kathy.)

Yes. While her life is already an open book, this gives us some insight into her childhood and life.

A manual for relating to the brain in a revolutionary new way, Super Brain explains how to use your brain as a gateway for achieving health, happiness, and spiritual growth. The authors are two pioneers: best-selling author and physician Deepak Chopra and Harvard Medical School professor Rudolph E. Tanzi, one of the world's foremost experts on the causes of Alzheimer’s. What made the experience of listening to Super Brain the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed the science that was explained in it. That, mixed with the spiritual aspect, really gave the book weight.
