Let me start by saying I am a huge fan of the Liaden Stories and have been since the 80s. I have read them all multiple times and wait with baited breath of the next book in the Balance of Trade arc. Having said that --- Andy Caploe's female voices drive me batty. They are all breathy and whiny and ugh. Miri is not breathy - she is mercenary Sargent for the sake of the first egg. And all of his minor female characters sound the same.
I am going to get Carpe Diem and see if it gets better. If not I don't know if I will buy the others in this arc that he reads which is really sad.
Love these books. They are wonderfully written space opera and I can't get enough. But seriously, Andy Caploe???? I have adjusted to Miri's voice and it is not nearly as breathy as it was in book one. Emirith Tiazan and the General are shrill. But the one that really drove me crazy was Ren Zel. What was he trying to do with that one? Make him sound like a computer? the voice is so mechanical in tone and pacing. Ren Zel doesn't have a huge part in this book but he has more in the next book and I really hope it smooths out. Didn't like that one at all. Some other reviewers mentioned that Nelerik's voice bugged them but I didn't have that issue. It is lighter in tone than you might expect from a guy so big but it worked for me. Still and all the audio books are worth listening to.
I love the Liadan books by Miller and Lee and this one is no exception. I have read it multiple times. I wrote in my review for Agent of Change that Andy Caploe's female voices drive me nuts and I still don't like them. Miri's voice improved in this one - but all his female voices are so breathy and quite frankly most of them are whiney - I will get Plan B but because I love the books - not because I like Andy Caploe's narration.
I have read this series several time, I am a big fan of Lois McMaster Bujold, and this is one of my favorite books. I have to admit I was hesitant to listen to it since I find I can easily turned off by a reader but Bernadette Dunne does a beautiful job. The entire series is wonderfully done and was a great investment.
