I bought this book for my kids to read in high school. I'm not sure if either of them finished it. The book sat for years on the shelf and occassionally I would look at it and think I might try it, but being a slow reader I never did. I downloaded the book and within 10 minutes I was hooked. I love George Guidall and he did a great job.
I was always told the story was about a man who went to prison for stealing bread. That was all. This book is so much more. I will never tell anyone it is about a man who stole bread. It is a book about lies, abuse, treachery and plain old meanness. It is about grace, mercy, compassion, loyalty, love and honor.
Difficult, memorable and bittersweet
The ending. I am not one that cries but I did. I think about this book and ending a lot.
I love this series. I would love to live in a town like this and know these people. From the cranky but loveable Doctor O'Reilly to the self serving Councelor Bishop to Kinky the Doctors' housekeeper, this is a place you want to visit over and over again.
This book ranks up at the top. I really enjoyed the characters and the story.
I loved the end. I was so surprised I had to stop and rewind and make sure I heard correctly.
I have heard Simon Vance before and once again he was very good. One character was hard to understand but it could have been me. I learned to pay close attention when this character came up.
The ending where everything was revealed, I sat surprised, a little sad for the uncle. I was left wondering, as he did, if he would have been a different person had he known the truth. Would he have made different choices and been a better man? Or would he have continued down the path he chose, no matter?
Yes, but tell them it will leave them wanting.
Scott Brick did a good job.
I just felt like the story could have been better. I keep thinking if another person would have written this story it might have been better. It had such great potential but didn't quite make it.
Loyalty, Love and Honor
He didn't just read the book, he understood it and the characters.
The narration made it a chore to listen to. I had to relisten to parts since his inflection was so off I never could figure out why everyone was so angry all the time.
This book might be as good as the rest but I don't know. I will consider buying the papeback and reading it myself.
Don't get me started!
He made everyone sound angry. Made Irene sound old. I couldn't tell one character from another. I kept getting lost and having to relisten to parts. Just a bad job.
A different narrator was needed.
I'm sorry to say but this was a waste of my money. I have not enjoyed this book at all. I read the other reviews that said the narration was bad, but I was going to give it a try anyway since I really enjoyed the Mitch Rapp stories. Mistake!
The narrator makes everyone sound angry all of the time. It seems to me the narrator didn't really know the charcters.
