The unthinkable has occurred in the kingdom of Lyonya. The queen of the Elves - known as the Lady - is dead, murdered by former elves twisted by dark powers. Now the Lady’s half-elven grandson must heal the mistrust between elf and human before their enemies strike again. Yet as he struggles to make ready for an attack, an even greater threat looms across the Eight Kingdoms.Throughout the north, magic is reappearing after centuries of absence, emerging without warning in family after family - rich and poor alike.

Would you try another book from Elizabeth Moon and/or Angela Dawe?

    Absolutely ANYTHING By Elizabeth Moon.
I have found no tale, novella or epic tale, to be wanting in any characteristic required for captivating and engaging. I've never been let down by the author.
Angela Dawe would do best to never wander from insipid, whine-some romances.
The narrator wgo supposedly "performs" this novel couldn't even been bothered to develop character voice, syntactic, accents, as previous readers Jennifer Van Dyck and Susan Ericksen , of the previous books in this series.
It sounds as if this is the first an only book of this series the narrator has read. And is it some rule that no one should listen to what has been done before in an attempt to preserve consistency of personalities and PRONUNCIATION???

What other book might you compare Limits of Power to and why?

Absolutely anything by this author is well worth reading and listening to.
If you are in a position to better listen to books rather than read them, whether time constraints or impairment, the Paksanarian books are ALL worthy of repeated visiting.

As well The Vatta Saga is the same quality, tho a very different environment.

The Speed of Dark, and Remnant Population are both unique views of difficult situations.

Would you be willing to try another one of Angela Dawe’s performances?

Mx. dawe needs a bit of voice acting study.
The company "Focus on the Family Radio" does a kids camp every year to introduce the uninitiated to voice acting.
That might be a ggod place to staryt.
every male voice is gapsy and husky and an obvious starin at reaching a non-existent lower register.,
I have heard Simon Vance , a solid baritone, read high voices without forcing a caricature> Ad I have hear an Dyke and Eriksen read the King, The squires, base born common, elvish, dwarvish, and gnomes so very well and distinctly after each was introduce there was almost no need to identify the speaker. The voicing, tone, accent, pronunciation, speech habits were so nicely and individually established you knew who was speaking before the author's identifications.

Six chapters in and Dawe shows no such creativity or ability.

I will cringe at every "Seer" where the word is "Sire" (as in land owner and master, lord of king) and every mispronunciation of "Taige (tAige or Tay-g) spoken as "tige"

I will sigh and lament that female voice is female and male voice is husky and gaspy and unconvincing...
And the whining... the drawing out of certain vowels into a whiiIIiiine may perhaps steal all the joy of this great book.

I notice Angela Dawe's list of other gigs is all romances... maybe this style works well with this genre.
It does nothing for Mrs. Moon's work.

I personally would like to see one of the previous Narrators hired to reproduce this book and this reneging be destroyed.

    Micelee?

Who is Mickelee (sounds like nickle-ee)????

    Mi-kell-ee
    Mi-kell-ee
    Mikeli Vostan Keriel

    HOW HARD IS THAT???
    I ASK YOU?????

Aris is in late teens and sounds like a little boy.
Aris was maybe 15 or so four years ago...

camwyn sounds like a boy trying to sound grown up.
Grown ups sound like grown ups....

What character would you cut from Limits of Power?

    Only the reader Angela Dawe

    Any additional comments?

I listened to the sample... and hated the reading instantly...
I am hoping it will iron out some how, but on the faith in the author's ability to deliver a stellar continuation of this brilliantly constructed story.

But it will take all I can muster to suffer this reader to the end of the book.

    Hugely disappointing!

    Great story ruined.

The mysterious reappearance of magery throughout the land has been met with suspicion, fear, and violence. In the kingdom of Lyonya, Kieri, the half-elven, half-human king, struggles to balance the competing demands of his heritage while fighting a deadly threat to his rule: evil elves linked in some way to the rebirth of magic. Meanwhile, in the neighboring kingdom of Tsaia, a set of ancient artifacts recovered by the former mercenary Dorrin Verrakai may hold the answer to the riddle of magery’s return.

What did you love best about Crown of Renewal?

    I'm a Moon fan from way back>
There aren't too many authors I read everything I can get my hands on.
Elizabeth Moon is constantly one of them.
She doesn't forget about details and weaves a good long tale.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Paks of course, but she scarce.

What aspect of Susan Ericksen’s performance would you have changed?

    Sounded very painfully deliberate.
voicing accents and giving good performances is well within her preview, but this book began stilted and wound up passably awkward.

STILL, miles beyond and above Dawe.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

no... we didn't stay with anyone or any one situation long enough to care.

    Any additional comments?

    Additional comments...
    Sigh... yeah.
I follow Moon's twitter and there have been some real world interruptions that can derail a good book.
This was a contractual completion and it shows>
I would HAPPILY have waited another two years to have had this NOT seem like a rushed wrap-it-up-and-move-on effort.

In disappointment I shall return to the best of all of the Elizabeth Moon book and reread The Deed of Paksinarion trilogy and be soothed and sated.

    Other recommndations from this author.
    the Vata Saga (5 books)
    Remnant (Novella)
    Speed of Dark (Novel)

All is not well in the Eight Kingdoms. In Lyonya, King Kieri is about to celebrate marriage to his beloved, the half-elf Arian. But uncanny whispers from the spirits of his ancestors continue to warn of treachery and murder. A finger of suspicion has been pointed toward his grandmother, the queen of the Ladysforest elves, and that suspicion has only intensified with time and the Lady’s inexplicable behavior.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Would recommend. The story is solid and moves... we just run out of road so be prepared to stop even though you want to run a full speed! It's going to be hard to wait for the rest of this story, but the author has created several really good inlets to possible stories within this saga and I wouldn't be surprised to see some shorts involving some of the smaller characters.

What other book might you compare Echoes of Betrayal to and why?

Everything up to this point.. I spent the couple of weeks before the release date of Echoes listening to everything from Sheep Farmer;s daughter on. What I want to know is where do we get Liars oath and Legacy of Gird on audio book?Elizabeth Moon is a singularity. From her research into old world military tactics and common things one doesn't usually expect, to the search for the right name and word for things and sounds, to the way she can just pull the reader not just into interest in the story by the feeling of personal acquaintance and connection to the characters, she is truly a great weaver or words and story. The Vatta saga is an whole other flavor of the same consistency in all these things. SPEED OF DARK is one of those rare phenomenon. Mildly science fiction, beautifully revealing of a place and mind so very hard to grasp and understand. Absolutely check it out!

What three words best describe Jennifer VanDyck’s voice?

Forgetful forgetful forgetful.. She had these characters and these names solid and although I was used to thinking Pax instead of Pox , she was consistant and her pronunciations made sense, the voices felt well considered per the characters' attribute and personalities. Then that gave her a book off. Some one else messed uop Kings of the North, and when the publisher had the GOOD SENSE to go back the the narrator who had it down, Van Dyke had forgotten everything she did right. Arian sounded old and stuffy, far to fru fru for the fearless dragon rider steward to the king. The elves lost some of their sing song lilt, but over kill on that in the first three books was annoying, but she HAD balanced it well. Names changed so drastically in pronunciations that it was hard to remember what cities and places... Aar instead of Air.. Aarinus instead of AraAInisSome of the voices seemed to shift in age and voice. PUBLISHERS PAY ATTENTION, Jennifer Van Dyke started out rough in SFD. She settled into a very good and comfortable acquaintance with these characters and this author's distinct style. by the end of the first book and from then on she OWNED IT. Don't give a book in a series to another reader after some one else has well established what has gone before and if you do and get the original back then make sure they review their OWN WORK for consistency sake. This issues can be settled on the shoulders of the producers and directors. It natters to the listener... and boyz... we pay the bills around here.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

SPOILERS ALERT:::The sadness of the rejoicing over a per-born son I knew would not survive the book because of the last paragraph of Oath of Gold. The mutilation of Dorrin's squire ... the brief appearance of our old friend master Oakhalow, ad the ruin of the lady.

    Any additional comments?

This story just got really big. What was an inroad to more stories has opened a floodgate of not easily exhausted SAGA. the one thing ... thee are plenty of places where some one says

This has been one of my favorite authors and this saga one of the few I have read more than once The narrator seemed really uncertain, almost like she was sight reading, with many Shatner-like pauses throughout.
by the end of the book it was a bit easier.
The story is worth learning to set aside the discomfort of the awkward reader. I'm glad I stayed with it.
And... in the next THREE book Ms. Van Dyke really finds the story's rhythm and the flow is much better.

Thanks to Mrs. Moon for this wonderful story. Thanks to Ms. Van Dyke for the hard work to bring it to audio ... it's been YEARS of waiting!

    Overall

It is shocking and disappointing, are being place, by AUDIBLE, on the KIDS list!

how many titles like this one with inappropriate contentWhile this is a very amazing look at recent history involving events kept hidden, it is NOT FOR KIDS.
the 13 and up disclaimer is insufficient warning of the impressively vulgar and profane language used , sadly, by America's highest official and men in service in the Senate and Congress. The inclusion of Wilson's legendary womanizing and sexual exploits, drug use, and involvement in other illegal activities are not suitable reading for anyone.
But if you are going to read it you may not want your 13 teen reading it.
On the whole the book is informative and audacious.

But it is for grown ups.
And hopefully parents will hear it before kids.

If you want to let you child hear some amazing history I suggest ANYTHING David McCullough.
