Kim Miller is an immaculately put-together woman with a great career, a loving boyfriend, and a tidy apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. You would never guess that Kim grew up behind the closed doors of her family’s idyllic Long Island house, navigating between teetering stacks of aging newspapers, broken computers, and boxes upon boxes of unused junk festering in every room - the product of her father’s painful and unending struggle with hoarding. In this moving coming-of-age story, Kim brings to life her rat-infested home and her childhood consumed by concealing her father’s shameful secret from friends.

What a great look into the way families are affected by one of its member's illness, mental or physical. It was excellent - loved how it displayed how the child Kimberly saw the situation, described it with a child's eye... Then a teenager's shame and an adult's sense of responsibility.

I love when a book can draw you in because you have empathy or can relate to the specific topic. This was that for me.

Well worth the credit. Would recommend...

Born to a prominent Chicago judge and his stifled socialite wife, Mia Dennett moves against the grain as a young inner-city art teacher. One night, Mia enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. With his smooth moves and modest wit, Colin Thatcher seems at first like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia's life.

I had high hopes for this book... But with 4 hours remaining, I found myself skipping chapters hoping for the end.

The book just didn't hook me - the story line was tedious and drug on and on. I found myself wondering just where was this plot going? No momentum... just a circle of before/after.

I didn't finish the novel. I have a large library - I've only stopped listening to a few books. This, sadly, is one of them.

I apologize for being so blunt. The narrator is fine - however, he is completely wrong for this book. His voice is dull and boring - and the book isn't that electrifying to compensate. I would only recommend this book if you want to hear about a woman being taken advantage of over and over and over by a boring narrator.

    Narrator was good.

Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.

Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle - and people in general - has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands.

What mother doesn't want to get away at times? What mother doesn't wish that she could just walk away from all of the demands of home, children, spouse and peers?

This book is a solid story about a mother who checks out - and it's not just lighthearted... you get into the meat of a potential mental imbalance that cause a mother to leave her life.

Great narration - very well suited.

In this irresistibly imagined belowstairs answer to Pride and Prejudice, the servants take center stage. Sarah, the orphaned housemaid, spends her days scrubbing the laundry, polishing the floors, and emptying the chamber pots for the Bennet household. But there is just as much romance, heartbreak, and intrigue downstairs at Longbourn as there is upstairs. When a mysterious new footman arrives, the orderly realm of the servants’ hall threatens to be completely, perhaps irrevocably, upended.

TKOT - cool story. I actually found myself drawn into this one a bit more because of the allure of fast money.

    Overall -well worth 1 credit!!

Ok - so I am like a lot of people and I see my relationship and want to know what I can do to make it better. Sometimes I read a book about relationships... but usually found in the self help section... but THIS BOOK - this is a book that can very possibly give you insight to your own relationship.

I loved this book - I loved the premise, the narrator... the story. I loved the ending - heck... it's a great book.

Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching portrait of the bloody price of power, The Son is an utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American West through the lives of the McCulloughs, an ambitious family as resilient and dangerous as the land they claim. Spring, 1849: Eli McCullough is 13 years old when a marauding band of Comanches takes him captive. Brave and clever, Eli quickly adapts to life among the Comanches, learning their ways and waging war against their enemies, including white men - which complicates his sense of loyalty and understanding of who he is.

I didn't want the book to end - it was a comfortable listen that drew me in. The novel follows the lives of three individuals who happen to be Grandfather, Father and Daughter. Each of them is a "son". I particularly enjoyed Eli's story line and focused extra attention on the story when his parts came up. Fabulous!

Some of the lines in the book we so meaningful - things you would underline and commit to memory if you were reading the actual pages. I found myself using the "back 30 seconds" button to hear things again because they moved me... The descriptions were so well written that it was impossible not to see the landscape or have empathy for characters.

I hate to mar this review with any negativity - but I really didn't like the narrator that read the part of Peter. His voice was shaky and depressing. I know he was embodying the personality of Peter in his voice - but it was too much.

Vic doesn't tell anyone about her unusual ability, because she knows no one will believe her. She has trouble understanding it herself.

I'm not sure if "intense" is a good way to describe this book - but I will tell you that I had dreams of vampires for a week! It was creepy - it was brutal - it was GOOD. Joe Hill did a great job of taking the reader into the world of mental imbalance. I didn't give the book 5 stars because I just couldn't wrap my brain around a world that exists in the mind but causes real bodily harm...

Kate Mulgrew did a great job narrating. Her voice is distinctive - and good.
