Love the concept and ideas of this modern fantasy, but the story dragged a bid at times...
Very interesting characters... I loved the premise about language...etc.
For what is new on audible this is for most people a 5 star book. I read a zillion books... so in light of that I gave it 4 stars... It is very slightly a "chick" book which is ok by me...
The setting is 1909 or so England.
I loved this book. Never knew what to expect so it kept me listening to it through to the next morning... Love the main character who was a polite solid quiet cowboy(his background) becoming a gentleman in British society.
The women he meets is a good tale in itself. But of course the story does not end there!
I would call this book a "Page Turner", so engrossing.
I had a chuckle from the "Flashman" books which I read previously. This book has an appearance of the "Flashman" character.
I am a heavy listener to audio books as my first choice, I have listened to over 4,000 of them. I would rank this book in the top 5% for being such an engaging tale and gripping. After the ending, this book is quite thought provoking.
If you liked this book, I recommend that you might also read "The Sea Wolf" by Jack London
performed by Frank Muller. "The Sea Wolf" is a gripping story not the typical read. It too was a "page turner" for me.
I highly recommend that you give this book a try. This book I will probably listen to it again.
I really liked this book. Fast pace and lots of action!
The werewolf concept really held my attention. The writing is very good.
Other books that have good action that I recommend are:
"Shape's Tiger" (the series)...
"The Warded Man"
"Beat the Reaper" page turning thriller.
The Eye of the World"
"The Way of Kings"
"The Lion's Game"
Book really kept my attention!
Kept me awake in bed instead of falling to sleep listing to it.
Interesting plot. A bit confusing as the story flashed back and to other subplots. I'm just getting old I guess.
While waiting for the next book in the series, I recommend these other excellent reads:
"The Name of the Wind"
"Thief's Magic" by Trudi Canavan
"Harbinger" by Shae Ford
"The Warded Man"
"Eye of the World"
"The Way of Kings"
"The Final Empire"
"Wizard's First Rule"
Other fast paced books for those who want to a break from Epic Fantasy genre:
"The Hunter from the Woods" Robert McCammon (Werewolf in WWII)
I think this is author's first book ... Happy I found it and gave it a try!
Book really caught my attention and held it.
Kept listening to it till I fell asleep.
Started up on it immediately the next day.
Unique plot and good pace.
"A page turner"
This book has such an outstanding plot!
It is such a fun story.
My other favorite "Heyer" books are :
2) The Grand Sophy
A "Clive Cussler/Dirk Pitt" type of formulated plot that is just "average".
As the plot turns to a new twist, you can easily predict the direction of the new turn...
I like the books when these two authors work together, but in this case they really blew it.
I strongly suggest readers to not waste their time or money on this book.
IF you have not read books by this author then I suggest you read my favorite book by this team "The Cabinet of Curiosities"...
If you liked " Pendergast" series, then I recommend you read:
"The Traveler" by John Twelve Hawks
"Fear Nothing" by Dean Koontz
"Sea Wolf" by Jack London and read by Frank Muller, a THRILLER & American Classic Literature.
A Powerful romance.
A lot is lost in understanding due to the culture shift of language and understanding of how people spoke at this time (1902) and just understanding every day environment of horses, ranches, terms of the day.
My grandfather lived 1884 to 1984 and spoke the same way. I watch "The Virginian" TV shows with my grandfather & family... Picked this book up quite randomly... Such a gem of a book.
I also highly recommend the following books:
Old Yeller - YOu'll cry when your read this one....
Note: Shane and Old Yeller are great for younger readers in that they are short books.
Author is just not breaking new ground.
Perhaps it is just me after reading all prior books of the series,
The book is now just average read.
The attraction to this book is the strong female character.
Fantasy genre books for young girls is very important. Ones which shows the "heroine" having independent thought and self direction.
No explicit sex scenes, but main character is fine with casual sex with various men.
So, I classify this book for adults 18+, but the gook is targeted at 11 and 12 yr old girl readers..
Regardless, the plot progresses pretty slowly and the reader does not help.
In light of so many other better books choices, this one is a waste of time.
I liked the detail about the subject matter of theft (at a high-end) skilled level
.Parts were a bit too grizzly!
The tough guy the "hero" is.Kinda like a "Jack Reach" type of guy.
Hero is smart and knows how to fight.
I initially listened to this book a couple of years ago. Second time thru is still good.
You will probably like Lee Child's books if you like this one.
