Two years ago, October “Toby” Daye believed she could leave the world of Faerie behind. She was wrong. Now she finds herself in the service of Duke Sylvester Torquill, sharing an apartment with her Fetch, and maintaining an odd truce with Tybalt, the local King of Cats. It’s a delicate balance - one that’s shattered when she learns that an old friend is in dire trouble. Lily, Lady of the Tea Gardens, has been struck down by a mysterious, seemingly impossible illness, leaving her fiefdom undefended. Struggling to find a way to save Lily and her subjects, Toby must confront her own past....

This is going to be really short because I'm still reeling in awe of how good this book was. Without getting spoilery, we learn a LOT about Toby and her Mom, there is the requisite, but always satisfying Hero's quest, we get to a crossroads in the romance department and finally we get Seanan McGuire's elegant prose.

If you've never read UF (Urban Fantasy), this series is a perfect introduction--it doesn't get better.

Whoo! That was a wild ride. I highly recommend the audio book version of this book--the narrator does a fantastic job of picking up the humor and emotion in the book.

    Great story!

Everything has a cost. And every act of magic exacts a price from its user---maybe a two-day migraine, or losing the memory of your first kiss. But some people want to use magic without paying, and they Offload the cost onto innocents. When that happens, it falls to a Hound to identify the spell's caster---and Allison Beckstrom is the best there is.

I loved the magic and the romantic interest in the story. The main character and the narration, not so much. The story did hold my interest to continue on--I'm currently on #3, but if the main character's flaws aren't corrected soon, I may stop.

She seems to be stubbornly oblivious to anything else but what she wants. This makes her very unlikable. And for someone who is supposed to be an investigator, she sure leave a lot of facts just hanging in the air. It feels too much to me like a bit of a lame plot device--left open for a big reveal later.

Despite my problems with the book, I loved the magic and this world. I see enough potential in this series for me to give it 3 books. I hope it lives up to it and I can finish it.

But the narrators smoothed out nicely after a couple of chapters. Despite the beginning, I highly recommend it.

And for Kindle readers, despite it not being marked as such, this book has been 'Whispersync'd'.

    Five stars,Five stars,Five stars!

Typical of a middle book in a series, there were a couple of spots where I thought the book lagged a bit, but overall, Sanderson did a masterful job of worldbuilding. My emotions got dragged all over the room and I was mentally exhausted, but happy at the end of the book.

On to the final book in the series.

I give this book my highest recommendation. Sanderson does Epic Fantasy with the best of them.

I haven't read any adaptations that I can remember at the moment, but even if I did, this would be the best one. All I can say is-Wow.

Every element of the classic story was there and even though I could see what was going to happen, it was delivered so well that I didn't care. Some would say that the ending was a cliffhanger. Being that the series is continuing, I feel more like it was 'chapter' to the story and didn't feel like a cliffhanger (which you know I hate with the heat of 1000 suns).

I purchased the 2nd ebook in the series, Scarlet, along with the audiobook version, before I was even halfway done with this one.

I highly recommend this series, even if sci-fi is not your normal genre, I am labeling it as scifi, but it didn't (IMO) 'read' like scifi. Great book and I can't wait for more from Ms. Meyer.

Welcome to the realm of the undead matriarch of a Britain where the aristocracy is made up of werewolves and vampires, where goblins live underground and mothers know better than to let their children out after dark; a world where being nobility means being infected with the Plague (side-effects include undeath), hysteria is the popular affliction of the day, and leeches are considered a delicacy; and a world where technology lives side by side with magic. The year is 2012 and Pax Britannia still reigns. Xandra Vardan is a member of the elite Royal Guard, and it is her duty to protect the aristocracy....

Re-read Update: I loved this book. I liked the direction that the author took with the character, but I can't really say why without some major, major spoilers, but those of you who like a good story won't be disappointed. One thing that I did enjoy is that the main character was surrounded by her 'people'. In a lot(most?) of UF the main character is so solitary they may as well have grown up in a test tube--despite years of life, there is no 'life' around them. Not here, Xandra's is full of siblings, mentors, long-term acquaintances, etc. It is as full and messy as real life and I appreciated that aspect.

If you are looking for PNR or the detailed love scene, I'm not sure this is the book for you. There is a love interest, but that is not the end game to the story, and while Xandra has a healthy respect for sex, it no more rules her story than it does her mind.

This remains one of the best fantasy series out there--without any qualification on what type of fantasy. The integration of faery into our world is done flawlessly.

I am on my knees in gratitude to Seanan McGuire for not including cliffhangers (she seems to trust her writing enough to know we'll be back for more) and no stupid love-triangle. Thank you!

I look forward to more of anything this woman writes. You should as well.
