  • The Far Pavilions

    • UNABRIDGED (48 hrs and 49 mins)
    • By M. M. Kaye
    • Narrated By Vikas Adam

When The Far Pavilions was first published 19 years ago, it moved the critic Edmund Fuller to write this: "Were Miss Kaye to produce no other book, The Far Pavilions might stand as a lasting accomplishment in a single work comparable to Margaret Mitchell's achievement in Gond With the Wind." From its beginning in the foothills of the towering Himalayas, M. M. Kaye's masterwork is a vast, rich, and vibrant tapestry of love and war that ranks with the greatest panoramic sagas of modern fiction.

Velan says: "Heroism, adventure, sadistic cruelty, and love."
What made the experience of listening to The Far Pavilions the most enjoyable?

If there could be a perfect novel, or book, than this is it. Everything you have ever wanted in a story is written on over 900 pages and it brought tears to my eyes to see it finally offered on Audible.
I have read this novel many times and everything else by M.M. Kaye, it is like finding a long lost friend and though I haven`t even listened to this program yet, I already know that it will be the best 48 hours of my reading history.
This is an epic story that covers ever emotion known to man, transporting you to far away places and lingers on your mind long after it ends.......

What other book might you compare The Far Pavilions to and why?

Have you listened to any of Vikas Adam’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Not yet

Who was the most memorable character of The Far Pavilions and why?

    Any additional comments?

I wish there were a zillion more M. M. Kaye novels hidden somewhere and we just found them. I can dream!!

    "Too much hype...."
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This book had a great premise but I think it lacked the knowledge and research to make it a real winner.
I can see why there is an attraction to the overall story, the romance and sexual discovery of a young women along a more forbidden path was something we need more of, that and more plot to make at a page turner for me.

Would you ever listen to anything by E L James again?

Lately I have been finding most books lacking, seems anyone can write a novel now a days. I guess I am looking for a literary genius type, Charlotte Bronte taken up a few notches, more strong females, liberated sex, but still with the literary prowess of the classics.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Narration is here nor there for me, it can distract, but if the story is great, listening goes beyond just hearing the words.

You didn???t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Yes, it could open doors for many more novels of this type, a cross over genre, romance meets erotica meets BDSM. Women have finally reached true liberation when they cannot just fantasize about sex, but read about it, write about it, talk about it and do it!!!!!

  • The Sun Also Rises

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 46 mins)
    • By Ernest Hemingway
    • Narrated By William Hurt
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The Sun Also Rises is one of Ernest Hemingway's masterpieces and a classic example of his spare but powerful style. A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, the story introduces two of Hemingway's most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. Follow the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of the 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates.

    Gerald says: "Bravo Papa!"
    "My first Hemmingway listen"
Would you listen to The Sun Also Rises again? Why?

Yes I would listen again, the story was easy to understand if not relatable and since this is my first Hemmingway listen or read, I have no comparision. I was surprised to find his work mundane, but compelling enough to keep listening.

Would you recommend The Sun Also Rises to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes, I would recommend this to others as the story was informative about various subjects and lifestyles of a bygone era.

Which character ??? as performed by William Hurt ??? was your favorite?

I don't have a favorite, but the Scottish accent Hurt did for Mike was great!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This book did not have me on the edge of my seat, so I stopped and started as time allowed.

    Any additional comments?

I was satisfied to have finally listened to the work of such an acclaimed author as Hemmingway, even if I was a little surprised at how mundane and simplistic his style seemed to me. I supposed nothing can take away from a great story, but if you prefer novels that are a little more wordy and challenging then you might want to pass on this one.

  • Steppenwolf

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 46 mins)
    • By Hermann Hesse
    • Narrated By Peter Weller

Harry Haller is a sad and lonely figure, a reclusive intellectual for whom life holds no joy. He struggles to reconcile the wild primeval wolf and the rational man within himself without surrendering to the bourgeois values he despises. His life changes dramatically when he meets a woman who is his opposite, the carefree and elusive Hermine.

Darwin8u says: "Save this Hesse novel for your midlife crisis."
    "Overlooked for the Title"
Would you consider the audio edition of Steppenwolf to be better than the print version?

Since I haven't read the print version, I cannot compare, but on the other hand, having listened to quite a few audio books, I believe this to be a very good preformance, easy to follow and the monotone voice of the narrator suited the mood of the book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Steppenwolf?

Lots of these, mainly the way his charactor is describing his own thoughts, I think I have often felt the same way, as many people probably have, but we don't have the courage to act on them.

    Which scene was your favorite?

When Mallor went with new friends to a party, he felt out of place and at that moment realized how much even the normal activities of others left him indifferent and unmoved.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When he realized his dance partner was the one person who understood him, allowing him to discover for himself how he felt about her and relationships.

    Any additional comments?

This book does not have a great title, most wouldn't know the meaning in translation, but it is very appropriate after listening to the story. I had known of it's existance as a classic, but until now, was not inclined to read it. I think the audible version would be better for people to understand as the story and the meaning of it, have been debated for years. Most of us could relate to Mallor and I feel Hesse draws attention to many deeper, darker thought processes we all have at one time or another. I enjoyed this book for pealing back and revealing some interesting layers of the human spirit.

  • Into the Wilderness: Wilderness Saga, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (30 hrs and 17 mins)
    • By Sara Donati
    • Narrated By Kate Reading

Weaving a vibrant tapestry of fact and fiction, Into the Wilderness sweeps us into another time and place...and into the heart of a forbidden, incandescent affair between a spinster Englishwoman and an American frontiersman. Here is an epic of romance and history that will captivate readers from the very first page.

    Jeanette says: "Love and Adventure"
    "A great storyteller, loved it!"

To me, this was like a continuation of my fav story/movie. The Last of the Mohicans. I love the references to characters from other favorite books and thought the narrator did an amazing job.
I hope to read more from this author!!! I kept picturing Daniel Day-Lewis as Nathanial, oh my!!!!!

    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When 18th-century young lady Bella Rushdale finds herself fierely attracted to handsome landowner Lucerne Marlinscar, she does not expect the rival for her affections to be another man. However, the handsome and decadent Marquis Pennerley has desired Lucerne for years, and when they are brought together at the remote Lauwine Hall for a country party on the Yorkshire Moors, he intends to claim him.

    Meg says: "Risque Period Romance"
    "Sizzling Hot!!!"

If I was a novelist, this is what I would have wrote. Love this book, loads of explicit sex, deviate characters and just a great debauched time had by all. A must read, but use your headphones!!!!
