A Study in Emerald draws listeners in through carefully revealed details as a consulting detective and his narrator friend solve the mystery of a murdered German noble. But with its subtle allusions and surprise ending, this mystery hints that the real fun in solving this case lies in imagining all the details that Gaiman doesn't reveal, and challenges listeners to be detectives themselves.

I did not know anything about the author, and I was doubtful if I would like this story, but it was free! It was breaking two of my rules, first the author was reading the story, and he was English, which general meant I would not be able to understand him easily and the second, my sacred love of Sherlock Holmes: do not even think of improving on this character's presences in my mind!

The author was just amazing! Proving to me my two rules to be ridiculous and left me wanting more! I have not purchased anymore of his works, but that is just because I want them all and have not figured out where to start yet. However, start I surely will.

Mark certainly knows Bill Cromwell, whom he meets officially when his father volunteers him for manual labor at the school. Bill is his polar opposite: outgoing, gregarious, athletic. But when a massive snowstorm traps the two boys together for three days, Mark learns that being popular doesn't mean you can't be bullied or abused - or gay. And that bullying doesn't stop at the school doors. And that bullying doesn't stop at the school doors.

    Story
What made the experience of listening to Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover the most enjoyable?

This theme is very common among gay romance novels. The nerd who is attracted to the absolute good looking jock, with no hope of anything ever happening. Most of the time this theme takes the road of the jock failing a class and needing tutoring by the nerd. It is surely one of my all time favorite themes. This actually took a side road to that basic theme. They ended up getting together from a snow storm, this is also a known ploy to get these two together. But this story went into family abuse and alcohol and gambling addictions and then into intervention of said family. Then even more, some of it was a little creative beyond anything I have read before.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked both characters, but there was just something missing with them that I still can't put my finger on. It was almost like this book, which is I believe aimed at young adults, was a text book to explore and bring about a very positive attitude towards gay youth and the issues they face. Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book, but maybe it was written by a committee. I mean both guys are basically too good and don't go through more acting out than I would expected if all the things that happened to them really did. It is a very positive story...and I guess I expected a little more acting out etc. Surely I believe it could be read by a straight youth and they would learn acceptance, tolerance for people who are different, family dynamic with addictions like alcohol and gambling. Adults getting together and having an intervention to stop the abuse associated with these types of addictions. And of course the importance of an education, especially reading and going to college.

What about Michael Stellman’s performance did you like?

Great read. Never a problem with him and of course like any good narrator he brought a great deal of my enjoyment of the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Well at first yes. Like I said I just love this type of theme. As I sit here and think about it surely it represents some of my own issues when I was going to high school. Except I am an fairly old man and I didn't come out until very late in life due to religious beliefs and the general social pressures in our culture. So I of course was very interested in the cute jocks through out school, even while I was in elementary school, but I would have found myself beaten up or killed if anyone had suspected of my interest in boys. I surely feel it is all very sad that us gays are treated in such a horrible and negative way. So I guess they give me some comfort to see that even fictional characters get some hope and friendship while still so young.

    Any additional comments?

I am always happy to see and be able to buy books of a gay slant, no matter what the subject is. It surely gives me some hope for the future for the younger gay men that are having to deal with their orientation. The internet has helped a great deal with that I believe. The people who hate us really never know or understand the damaged they have inflicted on the very innocent. I find this world and its ability to hate others very disturbing.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Surely sometimes it is all beyond my comprehension but I still find it all so fascinating. That us humans have the mind and the curiosity to sit down and figure all this out. Thousands of people with their different skills in imagination, mathematics, logic and more have been drawn to try to make sense of what it is we see when we look up into the sky, day or night. I look up and I am in awe mostly. Though now after reading this book the awe is both what I see and now what I know. The story is very well told and so much information is packed into this one book. It is all so amazing. This is also a book I will and have already listen to over and over again. Each time I seem to understand more.

What other book might you compare How Old Is the Universe? to and why?

Einstein's Cosmos: How Albert Einstein's Vision Transformed Our Understanding of Space and Time: Great Discoveries

This is another great book which to me brings Einstein's genius to light so much so you are amazed that the human race was able to bring into existence such a brilliant thinker. What a special gift he was to all of us. (Though this is a personal comment and is not in the book, to think that the ignorance and hate of Nazi Germany would have killed a man such as Einstein is to me a terrible thought.)

What does Brad Smith bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He is amazing with his narration. His tone is fairly neutral and he is able to present some very complicated ideas in a voice that makes you almost see it. It is somewhat of a long book over 10 hours and if his reading wasn't just perfect it would have ruined the experience, but of course just the opposite happens. Though not everyone agrees with me, and maybe it is my laziness, but I so enjoy lying on my bed in comfort and be able to just listen to such wonderful writings as done by the author and read by Brad Smith. Truly a joy of our modern day society. I find this so with audio. I believe it allows for my "self" to relax and take in what it being said in a way reading the book or watching a video doesn't allow to happen. I can just float in my imagination and enjoy!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

In a sense surely one has a certain feeling of joy when you hear of someone's success after so great an effort and then of course the opposite happens when you see a great effort and focus on finding a solution and failure is the end result. Even worse is finding a solution and have your fellow humans punish you for being brilliant. Surely science history is man at his best trying to understand and make sense of what he/she is experiencing. Another good reason to listen to the book for it not only helps you learn it also helps you experience the greatness of humans at trying to satisfy our curiosity.

    Any additional comments?

I strongly suggest you download the PDF that comes with the book. It has many drawings that make what the point that the author is trying to make easier to comprehend. There are also many interesting pictures that I found helpful and inspiring.

Is this the Perfect Romance Novel? Pretty damn close. The fact that this is a series just makes it even closer to perfect. The narration is excellent. Did I cry, you bet! Will I listen to this book over and over again trying to squeeze every last moment and second from it? Yes! So if you are a romantic and you have listened to the Audible sample narration and enjoyed it then don't wait one more second and download this book. And once you are done listening to it over and over again, then download the others in this series. I haven't purchased and listen to all of them yet, but have done so with 2 in the series and loved them just as well.

Where does Promises rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

It is a five star story. I loved the twist and turns of this romance and it is not often I find a gay romance that I enjoy so much. I read a lot of straight romance because there is so much, but it is surely a nice to run upon a gay romance that is done so well without all the typical gay stereo types. There is sex in this story but the relationship is the main theme and it is hot.

Who was your favorite character and why?

This is told by the main character, Jarred who is gay, and out, but finds himself being challenged by this new love in ways he would never had imagined.

What about Mark L. Jones???s performance did you like?

Just a great narration. Easy to listen to and great in his intonation between each character.

If you could rename Promises, what would you call it?

Unexpected love. Well, not really since it is a romance novel. But the love the two character find together didn't come easy.

    Any additional comments?

I am hoping that Audible will have available more gay romance. This book is a prime example in the high quality of the new gay romance novels in the market now.

Kurt is a talented but emotionally damaged football player. Danny is a rising star on the gymnastics team, an outsider in a high school where the football team rules. But the two form an unlikely friendship, and when one member of the gym team is viciously assaulted by the quarterback and his cronies, Kurt rises to his defense and challenges the entrenched stereotypes of high-school sports. This is that rare book that authentically captures the voices, fierce loyalties, and harsh justice of teenage boys.

In one way I wish I had never listen to this book. It is extremely disturbing. On the other hand I do feel that it is a book worth listening to. This is about bullying. It is about jocks. It is about being vulnerable. I know only too well what this is like. Fortunately, the physical abuse that is portrayed here never happened to me is all I can say. Maybe I???m not the person to review this book, but I guess I want people to be aware that this is not a book for children or even young adults, I feel.

Quantum theory is weird. As Niels Bohr said, if you aren’t shocked by quantum theory, you don’t really understand it. For most people, quantum theory is synonymous with mysterious, impenetrable science. And in fact for many years it was equally baffling for scientists themselves. In this tour de force of science history, Manjit Kumar gives a dramatic and superbly written account of this fundamental scientific revolution.

I guess this reminded me of my younger years reading Sci-Fi books, where the major character was a young boy coming of age. It has to do with a wrong done to his parents that needs to be corrected. This is your basic Good vs. Evil story. But I liked all the characters and wanted to know what happened to them. I liked the high end techno stuff in the book, made it very up to date. Actually listen to the complete book in one day. That is another nice thing about it, the book is long. I wish there was more by this author on Audible.
