After centuries in stasis, a lost task force returns home. Arriving from the infinite void the surviving ships discover that the Imperium lies in ruin. The Homeworld itself is destroyed, and nothing lives in the Ancestral System except an infestation of unknown bipedal beings - creatures soft, red of blood and warm of flesh.... When you colonize a planet, make sure the owners aren't coming back.... MECH is the story of a new Earth colony built upon the ancient Homeworld of a civilization presumed (incorrectly) to be long dead.

I must start of by saying this. It took a long time for this story to get going and really engage me. Having said that though, the rest of the series really moves along. So if youre unsure about this particular book, stick with it, it just keeps getting better.

I dont know where BV gets his crazy story ideas, but this one is just awesome. Never will you be unsure who is the bad guy and who isnt. We are here, and we are going to eat everyone.

I am not done with this book, but i felt the need to put out some much needed information that i seemed to have missed in others reviews. The narrator is terrible. He cant do female voices well, at all. I dont expect perfection when a narrator is doing a womans voice, but this guy makes them sound like Jim Carrey doing Vera Di Milo on In Living Color. Actually, half the men get that same narration as well.
The story is decent, and i eventually can focus on that. But man, if the narrator was good i know id really enjoy this book.

But no one really knew what sort of life they were going back to. In the Maze, life was easy... until Teresa triggered the end. In the world outside the Maze, however, the end was triggered long ago. Burned by sun flares and baked by a new, brutal climate, the earth is a wasteland....

For me,this second book really went a little darker than the first. We are finally getting some incite into the "objects" and other character details we all wondered about.

My only complaint......DON'T CHANGE NARRATORS! Dont get me wrong, the new narrator did a fine job. But the one voice i just got sick of hearing was McKesson(sp?). He now sounds like he is always talking with a mouth full of peanut butter.

New narrator or not, this book was awesome and i cant wait for the next.
