You are going to want to go ahead and pick up "Beyond Dinocalypse" at the same time you get this one- just TRUST ME. This is a good story- lots of action & adventure. There are a lot of characters to keep track of but each one brings something unique to the story.

Oliver Wyman gives another wonderful performance with this book.

Note: Knowledge of the Spirit of the Century game is not necessary to enjoy this book.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Loved the new characters that were introduced & revisting the ones from the past books (Pepper and Nashara). Looking forward to Book 5 in this series.

Robin Miles does a great job narrating this book. Love her work & would listen to other books narrated by her.

I really enjoyed this book. There's more political drama in this one- but plenty of battles & action as well. (lots of zombies) I like the massive time gap between this book & the previous - the worlds have changed but Pepper hasn't. I'm really curious to see what happens to the Xenowealth next.

Prentice Onayemi is a fantastic narrator. I would definitely listen to other books narrated by him.

The Benevolent Satrapy rule an empire of 48 worlds, linked by thousands of wormholes strung throughout the galaxy. Human beings, while technically "free", mostly skulk around the fringes of the Satrapy, struggling to get by. The secretive alien Satraps tightly restrict the technological development of the species under their control. Entire worlds have been placed under interdiction, cut off from the rest of the universe.

Enjoyed book 2 in this series just as much as book 1. I loved that the first part of the book introduced us to Nashara & a completely new part of the Xenowealth universe. There are some really outstanding moments with John & Pepper later on in the book. Loved the space battles & the way that story was structured.

Robin Miles is a great narrator & I look forward to hearing more from her in book 4.

Long ago, so the stories say, the old-fathers came to Nanagada through a worm's hole in the sky. Looking for a new world to call their own, they brought with them a rich mélange of cultures, religions, and dialects from a far-off planet called Earth. Mighty were the old-fathers, with the power to shape the world to their liking - but that was many generations ago, and what was once known has long been lost.

When he was 19, James Stark was considered to be one of the greatest natural magicians, a reputation that got him demon-snatched and sent downtown - to Hell - where he survived as a gladiator, a sideshow freak entertaining Satan's fallen angels. That was 11 years ago. Now, the hitman who goes only by Stark has escaped and is back in L.A. Armed with a fortune-telling coin, a black bone knife, and an infernal key, Stark is determined to destroy the magic circle.

Dark fantasy goes hardboiled in Book II of the hard-hitting Grimnoir Chronicles by the New York Times best-selling creator of Monster Hunter International. The Grimnoir Society’s mission is to protect people with magic, and they’ve done so—successfully and in secret—since the mysterious arrival of the Power in the 1850s, but when a magical assassin makes an attempt on the life of President Franklin Roosevelt, the crime is pinned on the Grimnoir.

I enjoyed this book. Its a great 2nd book in the series and is both a self contained story and a setup for a larger storyline that will continue in book 3 (?), Faye & Sullivan are great characters & it's been fun watching them grow and adapt to each new situation.

Bronson Pinchot is wonderful as the narrator. My favorite moment was the discussion the Grimnoir Knight had with Doctor Lincoln in Ada, OK. The Doc plays a very small role, but is quite memorable.

    Story

It's taken me a long time to figure out how to write a review for this book without including spoilers. Many of the reasons why I enjoyed the book are key points of the story- either plot or character based. The only thing that I knew about the book prior to starting it was that it involved time travel - all of my other preconceived notions were completely wrong. (Which is my fault for drawing unsubstantiated conclusions.) As a result, I spent the first few chapters of the book being shocked & surprised. The audio version of the book comes with a free copy of the ebook version. I knew the book had my hooked when I started flipping back & forth between the two versions because I HAD to at least finish the chapter.

What did I like about this book? Many of the story conflicts; the very different (opposing) viewpoints regarding the same events; and the outstanding imagery. This is one of the most visually stimulating books I've read recently.

There is a high probability that SOMETHING in this book will either offend you or make you uncomfortable. This isn't Riyria- this book has a far different tone than that universe. It is the type of book that will make you think and may even have you questioning what you would do in the same situations. Would I read another book set in this universe? Yes = this book feels like the pebble thrown into pond- the ripples created are still expanding & it would be very interesting to see what happens next.

The narrator, Jonathan Davis, is excellent.

One other hint: don't skip over the author notes at the beginning and end of the book.

Ray Lilly is living on borrowed time. He's the driver for Annalise Powliss, a high-ranking member of the Twenty Palace Society, a group of sorcerers devoted to hunting down and executing rogue magicians. But because Ray betrayed her once, Annalise is looking for an excuse to kill him - or let someone else do the job. Unfortunately for both of them, Annalise's next mission goes wrong, leaving her critically injured. With the little magic he controls, Ray must complete her assignment alone.

Enjoyed listening to this book. It has been on my to be read list for a while and came highly recommended (with very good reason). I like that the story is from Ray's point of view and that the reader is figuring things out at the same time that he is. Was left with lots of questions at the end of the book and wanting to read more (not a bad thing).

Christian Rummel is the perfect narrator for this novel. He nails the character voices and his performance is well paced.

Reading Twenty Palaces: A Prequel first certainly isn't mandatory, but it does fill in some blanks and the back story referenced in this book.

Audible, oh great & all powerful, please consider arranging for Book 2: Game of Cages and Book 3: Circle of Enemies to be conjured into audio.

There's no punchline- but the cast of this fun pulp adventure makes the plot even that much more interesting. This is a great story with lots of action & adventure. Professor Khan gets called to LA to solve a mystery and trouble soon finds him.

A few disclaimers - I'm not familiar with the Spirit of the Century game although I have read the other 3 currently available books that are based off of it (Dinocalypse Now, Beyond Dinocalypse, and Khan of Mars- these are all great reads!) This book can easily stand on its own although it probably will make you curious about what has already happened in the other volumes.

Oliver Wyman's performance: fantastic. He's the perfect voice for the Spirit of the Century books.

I enjoyed it. Having already read the first two books in the Powder Mage series, this was a great, short prequel to the books. This is a stand alone story but knowing what is to come makes you appreciate the tale all the more. It's fascinating getting a glimpse into the lives of the characters prior to Book 1.

Julie Hoverson does a wonderful job narrating the story.
