Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

Loved this lecture series. Lots of good insights to languages of Europe. That was the only disappointment that it was mainly focused on European languages with minor mentioning of other languages from around the world.

I found this book hard to follow. With all the names I couldn't keep the characters straight and it made it really confusing since I couldn't listen to all in one sitting. Maybe that would have made me feel different about it, but as it was, I didn't really care for it.

Very long book that left me irritated at the end. The characters are well developed and the story keeps you involved and waiting for what will happen next. Except that's exactly how it ends, leaving you wondering what happened next. I would still recommend, but I was frustrated by the ending cliff hanger.

    Very well read.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Hangman's Daughter?

Good details of life of a hangman and how they lived on the fringe of society.

After having heard Mr. Gardner's performance, even when I read other books from the series I hear his voice in my head!

Most American teenagers want a vacation in Italy, but the Betarrini sisters have spent every summer of their lives among the romantic hills with their archaeologist parents. Stuck among the rubble of medieval castles in rural Tuscany on yet another hot, dusty archaeological site, Gabi and Lia are bored out of their minds … until Gabi places her hand atop a handprint in an ancient tomb and finds herself in 14th-century Italy.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Great story and performance. The only bad part, the annoying music between chapters that is at a louder volume than the narration.
