This novel was not at all what I expected. Terry Goodkind's writing style has really matured with this novel, and it is extremely evident. The story line starts in an entirely different direction than where I thought it would and travels a path I didn't expect. While it is clearly a fresh start on a new series I am extremely hopeful as to where it will go from here.
the story doesnt fit well with the written canon at all but its perfect for the movie.
this is a must listen. The inspiration of Enders Game is evident. I have read several ripoffs of enders game and they don't stack up. This however does justice to the child warrior saga.
This is one of those books where you see it and go... Holy crap that could be a great story. Like all such books with great plots potential it runs the real risk of being total crap.
I was really worried when I got the book that it was going to be one of those crap books, to my pleasure it turned out even better than I thought it could be. I finished the book in about two hours and forty five minutes (yay! triple speed) and couldn't stop laughing.
This is Heinlein's best Juvenile fiction. If you like Survival fiction this is one for you.
The Author does an excellent job laying out many of the reasons we are in the current mess. His solutions however leave a bad taste in your mouth and asking the question "You want to do what?". The solution is a CG (Central Government) on a global scale. After berating the incompetence of governments around the world, after pointing out their numerous short comings, their corruptions, their weakness's, he seriously suggests that the way to fix things is to add yet another centralized political body on top of the currently existing ones. Only this body will somehow be wiser than all the others.
It is beyond me how someone as intelligent as Damon Vickers can suggest that the best way to decentralize power is to centralize it.
I was skeptical about watching the movie. We all know the story, great preview, sucks when you see it. After watching the movie however I thought "Wow, not that bad." then I thought hey wonder if there is a book. And you know the rest. Like most books its better than the movie and has a different ending.
The performance by Fred Berman is excellent and he really makes Glynn's story pop.
In short. Get it!
While the idea was great the execution was (Being kind here) moderate. While the book could have been awesome even as a Soft Apocalypse this book should be retitled bore me.
I spent several months going back and forth about getting this book. I love Apocalypse and post apocalyptic stories, this was one that I could have done without.
While one second after is non-christian friendly the same can not be said for Survivors. The story is good the performance of the book is good, but i have to give the overall a three star rating because of the blatant and over the top christian propaganda.
While some may say the book would be better if JW Rawles went back and deleted all christian references to the book, I would say that the quality of the book would be doubled or tripled if he removed half the reference to Christianity. Frankly as a non-christian it is insulting to have the subtext of the book be "If your not a christian your not a good person and cannot be a good person.". The author would be much better served to follow the C.S. Lewis approach to writing and be more subtle about his flag waving for Christianity.
In comparison One Second after while it has a great story is heavy on trivial facts, and is much more subtly Christian so that it can be read without you feeling the author is trying to shove Christ down your throat. While Survivor has a lot of great practical knowledge a good story but is constantly shoving Christianity in your face. It would be nice if these two authors could find a middle ground.
I despise abridged books i wish I would have seen that before i got it.
What would have made Exile better? Anything. While I love Ringo and Stirling is okay this book was a disaster from the first word.
