The Good House tells the story of Hildy Good, who lives in a small town on Boston's North Shore. Hildy is a successful real-estate broker, good neighbor, mother, and grandmother. She's also a raging alcoholic. Hildy's family held an intervention for her about a year before this story takes place - "if they invite you over for dinner, and it’s not a major holiday," she advises "run for your life" - and now she feels lonely and unjustly persecuted. She has also fooled herself into thinking that moderation is the key.

Rhonda Morrison says: "What a great book, Hildy is a great character!"

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I struggled with this book. I about gave up half-way through but the story picked up some. All in all, the story was pretty blah to me.

Would you recommend The Good House to your friends? Why or why not?

No. I read this on a recommendation and I just couldn't understand the lure.

What about Mary Beth Hurt’s performance did you like?

I liked her voice and her inflection. She captured Hildy's indignant attitude over her daughters views on her alcohol abuse in a funny way.

Was The Good House worth the listening time?

    I didn't think so.

Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas". As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. She lost some fingers and toes, but she survived, and famously testified that her 15-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, Ben sits in prison, and troubled Libby lives off the dregs of a trust created by well-wishers who've long forgotten her.

Where does Dark Places rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's definitely one of my favorite reads.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Gillian Flynn's novels always keep me on the edge of my seat. She builds the suspense perfectly.

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

Even though he was a smaller character, I really enjoyed Lyle.

If you could sum up Lean In in three words, what would they be?

    Empowering, Accessible, Candid

What other book might you compare Lean In to and why?

No other comparisons, since I don't often read non-fiction

Which character – as performed by Elisa Donovan – was your favorite?

    n/a

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

One thing that stuck with me was her story about her negotiating her deal at Facebook.

  • Where'd You Go, Bernadette: A Novel

Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.

Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle - and people in general - has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands.

S says: "One of my top 10 listens of the year!"

Where does Where'd You Go, Bernadette rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    One of the best

What other book might you compare Where'd You Go, Bernadette to and why?

The story unfolds like no other book I've read. No worthy comparisons!

    Which scene was your favorite?

I can't say because I don't want to give away the ending. But my 2nd favorite was the "intervention"

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    The final moments

    Any additional comments?

Narrator was excellent. The story was well written and built upon lots of electronic correspondences so it unfolded in a really cool way.

  • The Commitment: Love, Sex, Marriage, and My Family

Dan Savage’s mother wants him to get married. His boyfriend, Terry, says “no thanks” because he doesn’t want to act like a straight person. Their six-year-old son, D.J., says his two dads aren’t “allowed” to get married but that he’d like to come to the reception and eat cake. Throw into the mix Dan’s straight siblings, whose varied choices form a microcosm of how Americans are approaching marriage these days, and you get a rollicking family memoir that will have everyone—gay or straight, right or left, single or married—howling with laughter.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator. I didn't like the tone of his voice. Maybe it was the content but the tone of his voice came off sarcastic minus the funny.

Would you be willing to try another book from Dan Savage? Why or why not?

Yes I would. I am a fan of Dan Savage and read his column in The Stranger when I lived in Seattle.

How could the performance have been better?

Dan Savage can be merciless yet funny. This narrator didn't convey that to me.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Nah. And if it were a movie I'd wait until it came out on TBS.
