I'd recommend this to Epic fantasy fans. There is a lot of world building here and much of it is pretty good. There were a couple times when things seem a bit convenient (the rival wing, for example, was a bit over the top in being 'the bad guys) or there is a bit too much 'tell' rather than 'show' when learning the history of the world, but overall the story moves at a nice pace. I never felt listening was a chore and I really got into it.
I liked the Kettral training parts the best...but my favorite character was Adare. I liked how she was clever and actually was very proactive in dealing with things.
Not an original or even well plotted story, but still fun. This is a story about gamers who are forced to enter the game world...where they bumble around causing mayhem and do not role play (the cleric, for example neglected to choose a deity to worship). The fun is in the infighting of the party (which gamers will undoubtedly recognize) and trying to explain the rules to the newbies. There were lots of times I was cracking up.
The weakness was in the narration with several of the voices being annoying.
I almost didn't get this book. I listened to NPCs and found it clever and fun and that brought this one on my radar. The title sounded amusing, but it also sounded like one of those stories that would lag after the initial idea wore thin (a Vampire Accountant). But the author did a good job of continually adding a colorful cast that kept it fresh. Plus Fred the vampire stays true to his mild mannered roots and never loses his appeal. The author stays away from the temptation of turning Freddy into a badass and making him like every other vampire anti hero out there. If you have a sense of humor you will enjoy.
If you used to game you will love this fun little gem for gamers. Lots of humor and playing with tropes.
If you love geeky 80s references you will love this!. Very satisfying story. Will Wheaton was an excellent narrates tot as well. I kept picturing him as the main character.
Listened to it almost straight through. Never drags. I was sad to see it end. No false drama, just clever pacing.
Narrator took me awhile to get used to, but once I got used to it he was fine. Not as 'gritty' as much of Abercrombie, but still very much in his style. Characters may not be as memorable, but the story flowed well to a satisfying conclusion.
I enjoyed this setting, but sometimes the date is very mixed. This was a fun mystery and a fun group of characters. I'd love to see more of the Black Water Irregulars in the future...
Ton of fun
When you cross two genres like zombie apocalypse and super heroes it is difficult to get all the pieces to fit like a puzzle. Some of it is going to be jammed in for 'best fit'. And I think the author did a very good job of fitting the pieces together enough for the reader to willingly suspend disbelief.
This is a fun story. Great action and tension. Plus there are things that the author sets up in earlier chapters that seem to be random that turn out to be key elements later. But he doesn't belabor them. He keeps the pace moving.
Nothing outstanding about the narration, but it works. You forget that you are being read to at times and that is a good thing (in my opinion).
I love it when Cerebus finally got her power back.
There are times when you might feel Tigana is over-written. Sometimes you want to yell at the narrator, "I get it! They feel very very oppressed. Do we have to wallow in yet ANOTHER memory of this!" :) But the language is very beautiful and the concept is pretty unique. The characters (even the bad guys) have true depth and the world feels very very real. Someone compared this to Sanderson's Mistborn. While Mistborn is more action packed and may be a bit more fun to listen to it feels artificial and shallow when compared to this setting. Kay creates legends, mythology, rituals that make this world live and breath. Kay is definitely a master. And best of all he FINISHES a very complex plot in ONE BOOK. Everything ties together quite nicely and doesn't feel rushed at all. Recommended...
