I really wanted to like this book but no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t. I love a good adventure but while this book has lots of events, it didn’t add up to an adventure. After thinking long and hard about why I couldn’t like the book, I realized that the characters were never developed. Stuff happens to them but we never find out who they are other than on a very superficial level. It was very much about how much bad stuff can we have happen to two teenagers but not much about who there are. Without this characterization, it’s hard to really care too much. I won’t be getting any more books in this series.
The concept of forensic science and a female doctor at the time of Henry II is hard to believe and when I first started listening to the book, I did so expecting very little. I was truly surprised at how well this was done and thoroughly enjoyed the book from both the story and the historic point of view. I will be continuing the series and hope to remain enthralled.
This is a beautiful story, wonderfully written and beautifully read. While listening to this story I truly felt I was in a different time in a very different land. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
I was truly excited to try another Pern novel but this one is very disappointing. The story is depressing, no heart as in the other novels I have truly enjoyed. The characters have no depth, and the plot is often ridiculous with many hair brained ideas thrown in to try to hold the story together. I don’t often feel as though I wasted a credit but this is definitely the case. I suggest avoiding this book like the plague.
