"My Best First Audible Book"
My original plan was to get the three free books and cancel before they month was up. Then I got hooked. "Berserkers: The Beginning" was one of my first listens. I had read one or two of Fred Saberhagen's Berserker books years ago and like them, but never spent the time to track down and read them in any organized fashion as I did with Alan Dean Foster’s books, David Brin's books, etc. I am hooked now and a platinum member. This was an excellent Berserker book, and probably the best of the lot that I've listened to:
Berserkers: The Beginning (*****)
Berserker Planet (*** 1/2)
Berserker Man (*** 1/2)
The Berserker Throne (*** 1/2)
Berserker Blue Death (****)
As you can see, I liked them all. If Audible offered a 1/2 star, I would have given the three listed as three stars three and one-half stars. Blue Death was also very good. All are worth a listen.
"Not really a big Zombie reader, but..."
I like zombie flicks just like the next guy, but in general I'm a hard-core science fiction reader. However, between this series and JL Bourne's series, I'm starting to look for zombie post apocalyptic books. This series is riveting with the occasional tongue in cheek hurmor that I find myself laughing out loud occasionally. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't count this as a comedy, but there is some humor mixed in with the zombie killing and narrow escapes. Now I've got to use my remaining credit for the month on the second book. Arghhh.
"Harsh reviews seem undeserved to me"
I'm not military nor do I know about military protocols, so any slip-ups in that area went past me and did not bother me. On the other hand, this series is supposed to be set in the far future, and who can know how things will change. Also, I thought they were pretty clear that she wasn't supposed to be in the situations she was in. The original drop mission was a setup to kill her, so I don't see the problem with the plot there. I don't dissect books that I read/listen, I read them for enjoyment. I guess if you are a big military enthusiast looking for ultra-realism, this book will probably disappoint you. I found it to be entertaining enough that I plan to download the next one.
As to Dina's reading, I was entertained by the different voices. Did I stop and check them for realism and quality? No, I just took them as they were and enjoyed the book. Dina spoke clearly, did not have any voice mannerisms that drove me crazy, and I thought did a good job and was consistent when using a particular voice for a particular character.
I don't know why there is such a gulf in opinions, but I would suggest you listen to the sample online and if you like the sample, then you will probably like the book.
"An Excellent Series worth a listen"
I'm a BIG science fiction fan, and I can truthfully say that this is one of the best books that I've come across. Kevin Anderson has an interesting writing style with VERY long books, but short chapters. (I haven't read any other of Kevin Anderson's books, so I don't know if all of his books are this long or if it is specific to this series.) The short chapters keep the action going and keep things interesting.

"Kind of Weak"
I love Alan Dean Foster's books. I've read all of them I could get my hands on: Flinx and Pip books, Cachalot, Midworld, et.al. I even read Splinter of the Mind's Eye which was an excellent book in the Starwars saga. I just found this book to be weak. It was fairly predicatble and did not have very deep or engaging plot lines. It was an okay listen, but definitely not my favorite Alan Dean Foster Book... That would be reserved for Cachalot or Midworld.
"I love Anne McCaffrey's Many Drag Series"
I devoured all of the Dragon books by Anne that I could get my hands on years ago... in my youth ;-) ... I read every book through The White Dragon and loved them all. They are engaging, thought provoking, and just fun. I was so glad to see this available in audio format as I don't have the free time to sit and read anymore with a family and a 2 year old. I do have tons of driving time. This works perfectly, and this book, Dragonsong, was an EXCELLENT listen. I look forward to the rest of the series. I enjoy hard-core science fiction mostly, so Anne's writings which are lighter and more fantasy based are a departure for me, but I like them.
