Hilary and Mark Bradley are trapped in a web of suspicion. Last year, accusations of a torrid affair with a student cost Mark his teaching job and made the young couple into outcasts in their remote island town off the Lake Michigan coast. Now another teenage girl is found dead on a deserted beach... and once again, Mark faces a hostile town convinced of his guilt. Hilary Bradley is determined to prove that Mark is innocent, but she’s on a lonely, dangerous quest.

    Story

As this story unfolds, incidents and attitudes from the past are intertwined with the current investigation of the murder of a troubled teenage girl. It proceeds in an isolated, opinionated community with a sheriff that is sure that he knows the truth about all the local dirt.

A teacher is assumed to be guilty and is treated accordingly. His wife is sure he is innocent and pursues leads to exonerate him. An out of state detective does his own investigation and uncovers local biases. Independently the wife and the detective manage to sort out the truths. There are several story strands and twists that lead to the conclusion. Some are predictable and several are not.

This is a well written and engaging book. It seems low key, but the many subplots pulled me in and kept me guessing.

Joe Barrett is an excellent narrator.

Jack Reacher is approached by a Secret Service agent who needs a favor. "I want to hire you to assassinate the Vice President of the United States," she asks. She is the newly appointed head of the VP's security detail and wants Reacher to try to penetrate her team's shield. He has the skills and the stealth and no one knows him. How else can she be sure her protection is truly effective?

    Story

It is always amusing to me that Jack Reacher, who would prefer to be an anonymous wanderer, gets pulled into so many different scenarios. Some are by accident and others, when his expertise is required, take someone some clever investigating to track him down.

This is one of those “find him” episodes. His expertise is needed for an issue with the Vice President. His experience as a sniper and an investigator take him on a dash across the US and a final resolution that is very Reacher. This is a well developed story with a few more tidbits about Jack’s past. It builds from the introduction to the conflict and through the adrenaline rush to an unusual conclusion.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Jack Reacher is one of my favorite characters. I will definitely continue my journey through all of the episodes.

As usual, Dick Hill is an excellent choice for narrating any Reacher novel.

The "maddog" murderer who is terrorizing the Twin Cities is two things: insane and extremely intelligent. He kills for the pleasure of it and thoroughly enjoys placing elaborate obstacles to keep police befuddled. Each clever move he makes is another point of pride. But when the brilliant Lieutenant Lucas Davenport, a dedicated cop and a serial killer's worst nightmare, is brought in to take up the investigation, the maddog suddenly has an adversary worthy of his genius.

This is another “try something new” purchase for me. It is a decent listen. However, it is predictable with a formulaic bad guy terrorizing the cities, the need to identify him, and the chase to bring him to justice.

Lucas Davenport is a loner detective that doesn’t follow all the rules, but “catches” the evil doer. His personal life, loves, and interests make him unique character.

I always enjoy Richard Ferrone as a narrator.

With The Barbarian Nurseries, Héctor Tobar gives our most misunderstood metropolis its great contemporary novel, taking us beyond the glimmer of Hollywood and deeper than camera-ready crime stories to reveal Southern California life as it really is, across its vast, sunshiny sprawl of classes, languages, dreams, and ambitions.

    Story

I try not to retell a story or give any big spoilers. There is more than enough information in the publisher’s summary to get you into this one.

As the characters develop, it is easy to fall into their basic household routine. Of course there are some tensions, but they seem to be under control. Then one decision by one individual destroys the equilibrium. Like dominoes, things seem to fall one at a time and set off the next disruption. As the story proceeds the characters must adapt and, of course, life will never return to its previous status.

This is very well written and narrated. It is believable, cohesive, and well developed. I would not hesitate to purchase another book by this author and/or narrator.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

    Story

First, this is mild in terms of sci-fi or fantasy.

Second, in my opinion, this belongs in the young adult category. Some hand holding, kissing, reference to spending the night together, but nothing graphic.

I was engaged for about two thirds of the book. Then it got lame, like the author lost his muse. I was vested in the characters, but many just withered away.

When I am really into a book I can listen for up to 6 hours per day. When it took me 4 days to listen to the last three hours, I knew it was really bad.

The narrator did an admirable job with the material. In fact, he's probably the reason I trudged through to the end.

Over the course of his legal career, Andy Carpenter has lost a few cases. But that doesn't mean he forgets his clients. Andy has always been convinced that Joey Desimone, a man convicted of murder nine years ago, was innocent and believes that Joey's family's connections to organized crime played a pivotal role in his conviction. While there isn't much Andy can do for him while he serves out his prison sentence, Joey suggests that he check up on Joey's elderly uncle.

This series fits the lawyer/crime/mystery parameters.
The main characters each have a history and make contributions to current cases.
The tone is light hearted and sarcastic. Grover Gardner narrates this perfectly.

I have enjoyed every one and often listen to them as a a break between deeply disturbing books.

Catherine "Cat" Ferry is a forensic odontologist, a specialist in bite marks and the clues they provide. But while Cat's colleagues know her as a world-class scientist, she secretly attempts to manage her fragile psyche with alcohol, delving into the minds of rapists and murderers yet never allowing her own frightening past to creep into the foreground.

    Story

It will be difficult to write much without spoiling the story.

Several of the threads seem like the "same old things", but just when you think you know what's going to happen next, there's a new piece of information (some of it not true.)

The main character is carrying so much emotional baggage that it is a miracle that she gets out of bed in the morning! Yet, her expertise keeps her in the loop with the agencies trying to hunt down a serial killer. I was grabbed from the beginning by her situation and couldn't stop listening until all of the threads were truly bound off.

Geographically the stories include New Orleans, Natchez, the Mississippi River, and Angola Prison. This, with many characters, is a challenge for any narrator. I found some of the attempts at variations in the "southern" pronunciations annoying, but not enough to ruin the listen.

I highly recommend this book. However, it is not a quick listen nor an adrenaline rush so be prepared to sit back and get pulled into Blood Memory.

The season of gift-giving is here, and this year we've got something special for our members: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Yuletide whodunit "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle". Preston, Child, Pendergast: always a winner.

The fun in this series is that the totally improbable fits nicely into the real world. Pendergast is unorthodox and the mysteries are weird, but it all seems to come together for an entertaining book.

This was the one missing piece in my Pendergast audible library. I look forward to each new installment.

Jonathan Marosz performed the narration well.

Thank goodness this was a free listen. I’m not sure if this is a place holder in the series, the author trying to keep her character’s development moving forward, or a finale.

I have enjoyed the other D. D. Warren books and would purchase another; hopefully it will have some “meat” to it.

Kirsten Potter always gives a good performance.

Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: "You got the wrong guy". Then he says: "Get Reacher for me". And sure enough, from the world he lives in - no phone, no address, no commitments - ex-military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. In Lee Child's astonishing thriller, Reacher's arrival will change everything - about a case that isn't what it seems, about lives tangled in baffling ways, about a killer who missed one shot - and by doing so gives Jack Reacher one shot at the truth.

    Story

Reacher is continuing his incognito meandering tour of the US when he happens to see a news story. It tells of a sniper, someone he has previously warned to stay out of trouble, that has been nailed for a multiple-shooting-murder incident. He races to the scene to make good on his threat at the same time that the shooter demands that authorities find him. Reacher soon sees that the case against the man seems too perfect. As he starts to unravel the crime scene evidence, he realizes that there is much more involved. There is the usual muscle, gun play, and a devious plot to untangle and thwart. As always, Lee Child keeps things moving and the reader guessing.

Dick Hill has become the voice of Reacher; this is another excellent narration.
