"Fun but predictable"
Reminded me of "Snow Crash" but with mystery instead of humor. As detective stories go, it's somewhat predictable (a lot of 'who done it' intrigue). The science fiction part is also somewhat predictable. Overall, though, it's a fun listen - lots of sound effects/scary music - like an old radio mystery show.
"6th grade plot"
Slooow... Takes 10 minutes to describe 1 minute's worth of plot.
Nothing by Mr. Cussler
Great narrator handcuffed by laborious story line
It was like watching a Bugs Bunny cartoon - Nothing too terrible, but nothing you'd actually pay money to watch.
"Repetitive"
I should have liked this book more – it has many great science fiction elements in it – an apolyptical future, religious cults, struggle to stay alive, etc. But it really seems more like a short story that’s been stretched into novel length by repetitive ramblings about the same or similar concepts over and over again. The story is somewhat interesting, but becomes tiring a third of the way through and never really improves that much.
"Book 7 is more like one very long bad dream"
King?s Gunslinger series started out interesting and got better, with volumes 2 & 3 quite good! But this final volume is more like one very long bad dream ? mind you, not a nightmare, but just a chaotic, drawn-out dream that you just wish would end... The series started going downhill after maybe book 4 or 5 when King ran out of good ideas and started to repeat over and over the same stale ideas in an effort (I guess) to fill paper. The final volume is just one giant fruit cake of stale nuts and raisins. I guess you'll have to read it, if only to end the series, but if you love a well-crafted book of fiction, you'll be sorely disappointed!
"The very Definition of the word Tedious!"
Here?s an audio book that just goes on forever in trite dialog about a wide range of characters doing everyday things for hours on end! I gave up after the first couple of hours and now only listen to bits and pieces when I finish another audio book. I?m 5 hours into this and nothing?s changed ? same trite, uninteresting dialog with absolutely no plot or story development. I think I?ll just erase it at this point and start listening to NPR.
"A true epic story!"
Funny, tragic, happy, sad, and overall completely and totally engrossing. Had to go out and rent the old TV series after hearing the book (The book's better, but the TV series was suprisingly fathful to the story). Unfortunately, I would give the sound quality only one star. It is a real shame such an excellent book and such an excellent narrator are marred by sound quality equivilant to a weak telephone connection. Certain chapters are also less clearly recorded than others.
"A fun book!"
Somewhat predictable and (in the beginning) a little monotonous, but once the ship goes down the story becomes far more engaging!
"It's the History Channel without the video feed"
An interesting book, but sometimes a little hard to keep wholy engaged in. Lots of facts recited from old newspapers and other 3rd party writings - strung together in such a way to make a whole story. Reminded me almost exactly in both style and substance of the hundreds of similar stories cranked out by the History Channel on cable TV. Of course without the visuals.
