I read this book when it was first published and despite a tendency towards purple prose, it was an enjoyable read. The audio version destroyed the charm of the book. The narrator's male character voices were awful and the lead female character, supposedly 19, sounded like a 40 year old from the east end of London at times. I would rank the text of the book a 3, the narration a 1.
I don't know why the publisher changed narrators after so many books in the series but it was a change for the worse. The lead character is American, not British and the narrator's British accent is very distracting. Also, the narrator doesn't distinguish between characters with different voices so the narration is frequently confusing. While I enjoyed the book (Note: you have to read the previous books in this series to understand anything in this book), it took me about 4 hours to finally adjust to the new reader and I will probably not purchase the next volume if it is read by the same author -- I will go back to the book format.
