Spanning the 20th century, the story of Roses takes place in a small East Texas town against the backdrop of the powerful timber and cotton industries, industries controlled by the scions of the town's founding families. Cotton tycoon Mary Toliver and timber magnate Percy Warwick should have married but unwisely did not, and now must deal with the deceit, secrets, and tragedies of their choice.

Rozette says: "Scarlett O'hara meet Mary Toliver"
"Very Gripping Didn't Want it to end!"
    Overall

I listened to this on the way to and back of my daughters wedding in East Texas in my great grandparents home. So I am partial to that part of the state and country. I loved the characters and the book. It was sad and tragic, but I couldn't stop listening.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

    Kindle Customer says: "Great Narration!!"
    "Really Great!"
    Overall

I loved this! Jacob as an old man made me laugh out loud. I was intrigued with the circus operation. Characters were so well done- the good and bad! Highly recommend!

Marion and Shiva Stone are twin brothers born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon at a mission hospital in Addis Ababa. Orphaned by their mother's death in childbirth and their father's disappearance, bound together by a preternatural connection and a shared fascination with medicine, the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution. Yet it will be love, not politics - their passion for the same woman - that will tear them apart.

Mary Lynn says: "Brilliant story, pitch perfect narration"
    "Great saga and amazing characters!"
    Overall

If you need action and a fast moving plot- you probably won't like this- BUT if you love the types of books where the characters stay with you forever and the story lulls along and weaves itself into your soul- then you'll love this. Haima, Shiva, Marion, Ghosh, Thomas, Sister Mary Joseph Praise, Matron etc. All will be with me for a long time.

One question, a split-second decision, and Brian Darby lies dead on the kitchen floor. His wife, state police trooper Tessa Leoni, claims to have shot him in self-defense, and bears the bruises to back up her tale. For veteran detective D. D. Warren it should be an open-and-shut case. But where is their six-year-old daughter? As the homicide investigation ratchets into a frantic statewide search for a missing child, D. D. Warren must partner with former lover Bobby Dodge to break through the blue wall of police brotherhood, seeking to understand the inner workings of a trooper’s mind while also unearthing family secrets.

Molly says: "Keeps you guessing all the way through!"
"Great suspense but characters were a bit 2 D"
    Overall

I could not stop listening - even would wake up in the middle of the night to continue. Great suspense novel-loved how the narrator changed each chapter between the female homocide detective and the main character Tessa- I do have to say this crime novel leaves you guessing the whole time. The only negative would be that though the characters were good- they seemed kind of flat and unrealistic.

All children mythologize their birth... So begins the prologue of reclusive author Vida Winter's beloved collection of stories, long famous for the mystery of the missing thirteenth tale. The enigmatic Winter has always kept her violent and tragic past a secret. Now old and ailing, she summons a biographer to tell the truth about her extraordinary life: Margaret Lea, a young woman for whom the secret of her own birth remains an ever-present pain.

PA Law says: "Haunting and beautiful tale"
"Beware!Your life will come to a halt while reading"
    Overall

I finished last night and cannot stop thinking and wondering about the characters. While reading you will become completely engrossed and anything else in your life will seem like a deliberate disruption.

I would listen as much as I could and at night listen, then sleep for a couple of hours, wake up and listen some more. I agree with some others, I am not sure I would have enjoyed the book as much as hearing the audio version!

This book is for those who love the gothic, british tales of old and who love books. It does have long descriptive language and it may be too slow for some. But to those who appreciate this type of novel it takes you in and takes over your life until you are done, and even then, has a hold on you! I highly recommend! It is an incredible experience!

In this breathtaking and beautiful novel, the #1 New York Times best-selling author Anna Quindlen creates an unforgettable portrait of a mother, a father, a family, and the explosive, violent consequences of what seem like inconsequential actions.

Kimberly says: "Almost Unbearably Sad, Completely Wonderful"
    "Haunting!"
    Overall

The description and self dialogue of the main character, Mary Beth is so realistic of our thoughts as a mother, wife, friend! I finished this book over a week ago and cannot get the characters and events out of my head! It stays with you and really makes you appreciate the everyday and mundane gift of family.

It is a society that is, officially, a paradise. Superior to the decadent West, Stalin's Soviet Union is a haven for its citizens, providing for all of their needs: education, health care, security. In exchange, all that is required is their hard work, and their loyalty and faith to the Soviet State. But now a murderer is on the loose.

Melvin says: "Terror from all sides."
"Very engaging Russian serial killer plot!"
    Overall

I listened to this a while back, so I am kind of rusty reviewing it. It was really, really good and I loved growth and changes we see in Leo and his wife. Set in newly communist Russia where the system shouldn't have any killings because 'the system" would prevent it, so the serial killings of children now up to 44, are being dismissed and ignored as other accidents etc. Leo, who is an ardent believer of communism and the system is forced to examine these crimes and ultimately forced to look at his wrong faith in communism as he uncovers each crime. The ending is shocking and he is led right into its trap! Read it!

New York book editor Maris Matherly-Reed knows a best seller when she sees one - even if it is just a tantalizing partial manuscript submitted by a writer identified only as P.M.E., with the return address of an obscure island off the Georgia coast. Maris is intrigued enough to search for him.

    DMHVetSurveyor says: "Envy"
"Good characters, but be careful where you listen!"
    Overall

This was a great book and definitely captivated my attention. The characters, plot and the twists were great. But as others have said pretty erotic scenes! This was my first Sandra Brown and I chose it because others said it was one of her best. It made me want to hear another one of her books. It was a great summer book!

Daniel has spent centuries falling in love with the same girl. Life after life, crossing continents and dynasties, he and Sophia (despite her changing name and form) have been drawn together-and he remembers it all.

Shannon says: "DONT READ UNTIL THE SEQUEL COMES OUT!!!"
    "Intriguing Premise"
    Overall

I loved the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books. This is totally different. The idea of living through multiple lives and taking the memory of your previous lives with you and your love for the one true love through the centuries until you get it right was pretty good. I don't believe in reincarnation, but it made a good vehicle for the story. Characters were pretty good and the book definitely kept me engaged. The ending was very abrupt, but now I guess the story will continue. It was good, not amazing, but good.

Lisbeth Salander—the heart of Larsson’s two previous novels—lies in critical condition, a bullet wound to her head, in the intensive care unit of a Swedish city hospital. She’s fighting for her life in more ways than one: if and when she recovers, she’ll be taken back to Stockholm to stand trial for three murders. With the help of her friend, journalist Mikael Blomkvist, she will not only have to prove her innocence, but also identify and denounce those in authority.

    B.J. says: "Perfect."
    "Lizbeth Salander kicks bootie!"
    Overall

I am so sad that there are no more of this series! They have all been amazing. Some of the best written books ever. The narrator is incredible and added to the books and characters. It is really tragic that the author died/ was killed. I hope it is true that his girl friend has the 4th manuscript!
