In The Poisoner's Handbook, Blum draws from highly original research to track the fascinating, perilous days when a pair of forensic scientists began their trailblazing chemical detective work, fighting to end an era when untraceable poisons offered an easy path to the perfect crime.

This book is a great account of the history of forensics in the early 1900s. Combining my two favorites, non-fiction and history, it's a wonderfully entertaining book to learn from. It is such a good book I bought it for my mom. Coleen Marlo has done an excellent job narrating, as usual. A great book to listen to over and over.

A young man commits all types of sin, but only his portrait shows the ravages of his life. Oscar Wilde’s Faustian classic. Gothic horror at it's best.

I could not listen for more than 5 minutes to this wonderful book being blasphemed by an American accent. It totally ruined it for me. What an insult to Oscar Wilde, one of my favorites. Thank goodness I have the book in print because I cannot bear to listen to a British classic being read in a non-Brit accent. Horrifyingly disappointing. Do not make the same mistake.

For two thousand years, cadavers have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way.

This is one of the best books I've purchased from audible. I got it on a whim and was amazed at what an entertaining treasure this book is. I mean, it had such an impact on me that not only did I register as a donor when I renewed my license, I also changed my post-mortem plans of being cremated to being donated to science. Before this book I was horrified at the thought of what would happen to me after death...I cringed at the thought of discussing death. This book has really changed my outlook on the whole thing. Mary Roach is very insightful and I love the way she thinks...the dark humor is very familiar. She went above and beyond in her research, as she isn't involved in the "death industry". I'm so thankful that she decided to write this wonderful book instead of her usual books on travel. Shelly Frasier is amazing as well. Great voice and expression. I have listened to it 3 times as of 12/13/11...and will listen to it again I'm sure.

In this darkly comical look at the sinister side of our relationship with the natural world, Stewart has tracked down over one hundred of our worst entomological foes - creatures that infest, infect, and generally wreak havoc on human affairs. From the world's most painful hornet, to the flies that transmit deadly diseases, to millipedes that stop traffic, to the Japanese beetles munching on your roses, Wicked Bugs delves into the extraordinary powers of many-legged creatures

I cannot deal with the multiple, separate chapters that take up all this space on my mp3. I can't really give an accurate review because I wasn't able to figure out what I had and hadn't listened to. I hate that I wasted a credit on a book I will never listen to.

Beware! The sordid lives of plants behaving badly. A tree that sheds poison daggers; a glistening red seed that stops the heart; a shrub that causes paralysis; a vine that strangles; and a leaf that triggered a war. Amy Stewart, best-selling author of Flower Confidential, takes on over two hundred of Mother Nature's most appalling creations in an A to Z of plants that kill, maim, intoxicate, and otherwise offend.

  • The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements

Reporter Sam Kean reveals the periodic table as it’s never been seen before. Not only is it one of man's crowning scientific achievements, it's also a treasure trove of stories of passion, adventure, betrayal, and obsession. The infectious tales and astounding details in The Disappearing Spoon follow carbon, neon, silicon, and gold as they play out their parts in human history, finance, mythology, war, the arts, poison, and the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them.

It is just so well written, informative, funny- an all time favorite for sure. I love the way it charts the periodic table of the elements and gives little insights and back stories on them. I have learned alot from and am constantly entertained by this wonderful book. No matter how many listens it never gets old.
