Ursula's lives become engrossing - what small decision or trick or turn of fate will change the course of things this time round? As the book unfolds most characters take a place on center stage, and some are more endearing than others! The story is partly a reflection on the British social structure in the first half of the 20th century - always entertaining - but also a reflection on the journeys our lives take. It made me reflect on the small decisions I have made that have resulted in big changes in my world! I thoroughly enjoyed both the book and the narration.
I do hope that this is the first in a series! The narration is excellent. Three compelling women are the main characters ... All are very human...they have flaws, problems and troubles from their pasts - but they are strong, effective detectives. The story line is good, but the strength of this book is the tightly woven way that the author reveals who these women are and their back stories. I want to meet them again and see how their lives unfold, so..... More please.
This is a great series, I thoroughly enjoy the humor, the characters and of course the carefully crafted thrilling plots. Carl, cynical, sardonic and oh so human, the mysterious and totally lovable Assad, loopy Rose and her alter egos, tortured Hardy and all the regular cast are here … and they dive into the ugly and shocking world of eugenics - past and present. Yes about two thirds of the way through the foreshadowing of 'whodunnit' is there - but that does not take anything away from the story. I can hardly wait for the next time we visit Carl et al - because Adler-olsen makes you care about them all!
Oh how I revel in the daily lives of the folk who live in the vicinity of Scotland Street! Poor benighted Bertie dealing with his horrific mother and demonstrating great insight into baby Ulysses' allergic reaction to her, insecure Matthew (How will he and Elspeth ever cope? Hopefully AMS will tell us in another episode soon), Cyril - the wonder dog, Angus, Domenica, and of course the indomitable Big Lou - how I enjoy them all. Full of gentle wit and cutting humor both, this book is a delight so cleverly written, as are all in this series.
I enjoy Peter Lovesey mysteries; this story may not be his best but still held my attention. However, I really missed Simon Prebble - who captures Diamond and his team's voices perfectly.
Ohlsson has created an interesting cast of characters in this book - with an interesting, if depressing, storyline. However, the narrator spoiled this for me - she is wonderful with the Swedish accents when reading dialogue, but why she used an affected and pompous (and at times incorrect) English accent to narrate the body of the book is beyond me - maybe it's because I am English myself and am more sensitive to this, but it may have been better if she had stuck to her native Canadian.
A real treat! This was my first Reginald Hill and I will be on the look out for more. Tightly plotted, lots of lovely twists and turns. Characters are developed with a palette of dry, wry humor - although the male villains are treated more kindly in this than their female co-conspirators. Excellent narration, Jonathan Preeble delivers this book with skill and style. My favorite character? The dog! You'll see .....
I'm addicted - more please! In the second of the series we get to know more of the lives, trials and everyday cares and woes of the enigmatic, and oft times foolhardy Frieda, as well as her friends and colleagues in her tenuous police 'partnership'. Intriguing plot and the shadow of the psychopathic villain from the first book hovers throughout ... just scrumptious!
So good I just downloaded the next in the series! Interesting characters, twists and turns, neat conclusion - and narrated beautifully! Highly recommended.
Unfortunately the story is predicable, I kept drifting away from listening as it just didn't capture my interest sufficiently - disappointing.
Good book - but please .... the accent used by the narrator is some sort of hybrid Celtic, but Welsh it is not!
