Khaled Hosseini, the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations.

You've done it before. Saw something wrong with him--whether it was suspect grooming habits or ridiculously childish behavior--but let it slide. It's not that big of a deal. Except it totally was. You wanted to fall in love, but ended up going insane. You swore you'd never do it again. But did. Don't beat yourself up. In the search for love, we've all either blatantly ignored or completely missed red flags. Instead, smarten up. It's time to figure out what you missed and learn how to avoid similar flagtastic fiascos in the future. If you raise your red flag awareness now, you'll be able to green-light a real relationship down the road.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It worked to kill time and I did not dislike it, but I wouldn't pay for the book.

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: his sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

Would you listen to The Cuckoo's Calling again? Why?

Yes. The plot has so many twists and turns, I could listen again and see what I missed the first time. Plus, the narration of this story is superb and I could see each character as he spoke. Some narrators are boring or don't know how to change it up. This is my favorite one yet!

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

What made the experience of listening to The Kite Runner the most enjoyable?

The narration by the author was superb and I truly enjoyed listening to him. The descriptive story telling, the raw emotions, the tug and pull of every chapter; I couldn't stop listening and when I did, I couldn't wait to start again. I've read 1,000 Slendid Suns, which was again, phenomenal, and just purchased his latest novel which I cannot wait to dive into!

What did you like best about this story?

The best lesson learned was that a lifetime of guilt and self doubt can be such a waste of ones life. Moreover, how quickly one can redeem themselves and the true bond of family, family secrets, and pure love for ones brother can save a broken soul and find patience in forgiveness.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Absolutely yes!

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

    David says: "Somber but gripping"

If you could sum up A Thousand Splendid Suns in three words, what would they be?

    Gripping, beautiful, and terrifying

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The descriptions bring you to a far away place, the details make your heart jump for joy or scream in disbelief, and the characters become a part of you somehow. Wanting them to succeed and wishing them to escape the horrors and tragedies of war and worn out beliefs. This book was so far out from my normal reads, but I feel as if I made a new friend or two by reading it.

    Any additional comments?

I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to expand their library or their knowledge! Beautiful and gut wrenching all at once... Not for anyone who is looking for upbeat happy times though.
