  • Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West

    • UNABRIDGED (19 hrs and 41 mins)
    • By Gregory Maguire
    • Narrated By John McDonough

Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

Kathleen says: "It's not easy being green"
    "Decent, but not great"

The concept for this book intrigued me - what an original idea! The moral and ethical questions raised are thought provoking and this should be a great book. However, I found that it didn't keep my attention. It was one of those "reads" where you suddenly realize that you haven't been listening for several minutes. I found myself constantly rewinding and relistening to parts because my mind wandered off. The narrator is good, so that wasn't the issue. I think part of the problem is that the writing is a little stiff, or, as the author would say, "the prose is a tad stilted".

Still, I listened to the whole book and probably got my credit's worth, so I rate it a 3.

  • A Redbird Christmas

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Fannie Flagg
    • Narrated By Fannie Flagg
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

With the same incomparable style and warm, inviting voice that have made her beloved by millions of readers far and wide, New York Times best-selling author Fannie Flagg has written an enchanting Christmas story of faith and hope for all ages that is sure to become a classic.

Sara says: "A sad bittersweet story"
    "Cute and light"

This is light reading that is fun to listen too, especially during the holiday season. It is a "feel good" story that won't win any literary awards but does a good job of keeping you entertained. I enjoyed it!

  • Wuthering Heights

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 23 mins)
    • By Emily Brontë
    • Narrated By Flo Gibson
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Catherine Earnshaw's passionate statement reveals the core of Emily Bronte's tempestuous literary masterpiece. Meeting as children, Catherine and Heathcliff begin a relationship that grows into obsession as family, class, and fate work against them as much as their own jealous natures.

Tamara says: "compelling and intense; the narrator grew on me"
"I just HAD to read a classic..."

I have been trying to read all the classics, and this one had been on my list for a while. YAWN. It was hard to hear/understand the narrator at points, which made an only mildly entertaining book a chore to get through.

I have noticed that many classics have more subtle themes and plot lines, but this one was quite dreary. It isn't a happy story, and it is slow going.

  • The Legend of Bagger Vance

    • ABRIDGED (5 hrs and 7 mins)
    • By Steven Pressfield
    • Narrated By Ronny Cox

In Steven Pressfield's richly imagined, vividly detailed story, golf legends Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen are joined by a local unsung opponent, the troubled war hero Rannulph Junah. Their match is thrilling competition, but the key to the outcome lies with caddie Bagger Vance, who carries the secret of the Authentic Swing.

Robert says: "Blows the movie away!"
    "Couldn't even finish!"

Goodness but this was a boring book. Just flat-out B-O-R-I-N-G!! I am not a golfer, but my husband is an avid golfer, so I think I know more about the sport than most non-golfers. But I really expected some kind of STORY - foolish me!

I ended up telling my husband that I had a hard time getting through this (he had read the book previously) and his response was, "Oh, I could have told you it was dull!" Well, now I am telling you - this is DULL! Keep in mind that I sometimes enjoy slow paced, descriptive, insightful books. This isn't one I enjoyed - couldn't even finish it!

  • Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 59 mins)
    • By Mary Roach
    • Narrated By Shelly Frasier
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

For two thousand years, cadavers have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way.

Matthew says: "Darn funny if you're open to the idea."
"Ok...not great but not a waste of a credit"

This book was only 'ok'. I like all types of books, so I think I am a pretty open minded listener. I am not easily offended, and this book didn't really offend me, but I could see where some people could be VERY turned off. The author tries to add humor - sometimes I believe in an attempt at comic relief, but often falls short by being too flippant or just plain not funny.

It was interesting to hear all of the different ways a cadaver can be used in the name of science, and also to hear the different uses and superstitions that have transpired through the years.

This wasn't a bad book - I think many people will find it mildly entertaining while some will hate it.

  • Sofie Metropolis

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 13 mins)
    • By Tori Carrington
    • Narrated By Anna Fields

Sofie's a young Greek-American woman living in Queens. If you'd asked her a few months ago what she'd be doing now, she'd have replied, "I'm going to be married to a wonderful guy and working at my father's, or maybe my grandfather's, Greek restaurant."

Amazon Customer says: "Don't expect too much"
"Amusing, a la Big Fat Greek Wedding"

This book kept me entertained. It isn't going to be marked as a "Great Work of Fiction", but it passed some hours enjoyably. The narrator was interesting - there were a few voices that were pretty remarkable. One of Sofie's grandfathers sounded like a completely different narrator - and very male! But then the narrator also did some accents horribly - particularly the secretary at the office. Luckily, she is a small character, so you don't have to listen to it much!

    Charles Stembridge says: "Narrator"
"Narrator varies volume - very annoying"

I haven't yet finished this audiobook, so i can't comment on the story line, although so far it has kept my attention. However, the narrator many time uses the volume of his voice rather than the inflection to distinguish between characters. This causes two problems - all the women sound the same (quiet) and all the men sound the same (loud) except for two men who sound different from the others because they "talk" faster. But of course, those two fast, loud talkers sound the same. On top of being confusing because of the volume issue, it is also very difficult to hear. If you are listening on headphones, then you have to turn it up enough to hear the quiet voices, but then it blares in your ear when it is a loud person. Since sometimes a back-and-forth dialogue occurs between a 'loud' character and a 'soft' character, every other sentence can vary, so it isn't something you can just keep adjusting. Even when listening on a stereo it is still very annoying.

  • The Botox Diaries

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 2 mins)
    • By Janice Kaplan, Lynn Schnurnberger
    • Narrated By Susan Denaker
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Lucy is a talented television producer with a husband, three kids, and a big-time crush on a game show host. Her best friend Jess is a divorced suburban mom with a sexy French ex-husband in her bed and a reality show "bachelor" named Boulder on her couch. Jess and Lucy's friendship flourishes through bake sales, Botox parties, and the transition from itty-bitty bikinis to "Kindest Cut" one-piece suits.

    Sarah says: "Loved it!"
    "Very cute - light reading"

I enjoyed listening to this book - I ended up liking the characters especially the main character, who was more down-to-earth than some of the secondary characters. It seems that whenever a story is set in NYC, I have to suspend fiscal reality as the books inevitably mention $500 Monolo shoes, etc, and everyone seems to be rich and famous; this book is no exception. The main character is a little more realistic, but just barely - she still manages to get an expensive gift from Tiffany's and moves in elite circles, but she does seem to recognize the extravagances. The book isn't "deep", but neither is it too shallow - it has enough substance that you can enjoy the light reading without it all seeming like a bit a fluff. It won't teach you any life lessons, but it will keep you entertained!

  • LIVE

    • ORIGINAL (56 mins)
    • By Brian Regan

American Comedy Award-winner Brian Regan lights up the stage in this live performance. He has been on Letterman five times, the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and had his own comedy special on Showtime called Something's Wrong with the Regan Boy. In his Playboy interview, Dennis Miller named Regan one of his favorite comedians. As he performs around the country, people are constantly requesting favorite routines. This recording answers that call.

Mark says: "Tell us some jokes... circus boy!"
    "Terrible recording! Need facial expressions."

Brian Regan is a very funny guy. I know this because I have seen his standup on television. I wouldn't have known it from this recording. First, the recording itself is horrible. It is hard to hear some parts, then blaringly loud the next. Secondly, Regan's comedy loses most of its humor when you can't see his facial expressions. I didn't even finish this recording.

  • I Am Charlotte Simmons

    • UNABRIDGED (31 hrs and 16 mins)
    • By Tom Wolfe
    • Narrated By Dylan Baker

Dupont University: the Olympian halls of learning housing the cream of America's youth, the roseate Gothic spires and manicured lawns suffused with tradition....Or so it appears to beautiful, brilliant Charlotte Simmons, a sheltered freshman from North Carolina, who has come here on full scholarship. But Charlotte soon learns, to her mounting dismay, that for the upper-crust coeds of Dupont, sex, Cool, and kegs trump academic achievement every time.

Eric says: "Decadence through the eyes of a ?good girl?"
"Lots of cursing, but I enjoyed the book"

I enjoyed this book; the narrator was very good, and it was less a true "story" and more just extensive character development. However, I did feel the need to put a warning that foul language runs rampant throughout the book. If you can not tolerate a lot of cursing, this is not the book for you!
