From July 10, 1943, the date of the Allied landing in Sicily, to May 8, 1945, when victory in Europe was declared - the entire time it took to liberate Europe - no regiment saw more action, and no single platoon, company, or battalion endured worse, than the ones commanded by Felix Sparks, who had entered the war as a greenhorn second lieutenant of the 157th "Eager for Duty" Infantry Regiment of the 45th "Thunderbird" Division. Sparks and his fellow Thunderbirds fought longest and hardest to defeat Hitler.

If you could sum up The Liberator in three words, what would they be?

    Powerful Enlightening Real

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Liberator?

When he got out of a tank to rescue his men and the SS decided not to shoot out of respect for a ranking officer that would do such a thing

    Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene was the whole story about the concentration camp and Colonel Sparks reaction to the shooting of the guards and his respect for human life regardless of the situation he was in. This was coupled with his reaction to the General that wanted a photo opportunity. I was touched by someone who could witness such horrors and maintain such decency in all of it - a true hero.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There were several shocking scenes in this book that made the reality of war come to light.

Jack Ryan has only just moved back into the Oval Office when he is faced with a new international threat. An aborted coup in the People's Republic of China has left President Wei Zhen Lin with no choice but to agree with the expansionist policies of General Su Ke Quiang. They have declared the South China Sea a protectorate and are planning an invasion of Taiwan. The Ryan administration is determined to thwart China’s ambitions, but the stakes are dangerously high as a new breed of powerful Chinese anti-ship missiles endanger the US Navy's plans to protect the island.

What would have made Threat Vector better?

I loved this story, which is probably why I finished it. Also, Lou Diamond Phillips was excellent as the narrator. However, the language was so bad that it should have an explicit warning. If the language was more toned down and reminiscent of the original Clancy novels this would have been so much better. As it stands, I'm not sure I will get the next in the series due to he language.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It was a fun plot. It really wasn't to the level of a true Jack Ryan novel, but still fun none the less. Several times I almost forgot I was running because I was so absorbed into the story. It won't wow anyone with deep characters or truly complex story lines with deep researched military understanding, but it is still fun and a good distraction to cardio.

What about Lou Diamond Phillips’s performance did you like?

He is easy to listen to and understand. Then, add to that the characters he pulls off and you have a great performance.

    Any additional comments?

Please put an explicit rating on this and any other Clancy's that are this laced with poor language.

  • Pacific Crucible: War at Sea in the Pacific, 1941-1942

On the first Sunday in December 1941, an armada of Japanese warplanes appeared suddenly over Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and devastated the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Six months later, in a sea fight north of the tiny atoll of Midway, four Japanese aircraft carriers were sent into the abyss. Pacific Crucible tells the epic tale of these first searing months of the Pacific war, when the U.S. Navy shook off the worst defeat in American military history and seized the strategic initiative.

Would you listen to Pacific Crucible: War at Sea in the Pacific, 1941-1942 again? Why?

I really enjoyed this book and was disappointed when it came to an end after the battle of Midway. I would have listened to hours more if it covered more of the war and will probably listen to this again.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Pacific Crucible: War at Sea in the Pacific, 1941-1942?

I was intrigued by the disparity between what actually happened and what knowledge the Japanese actually acted on after the Battle of the Coral Sea and how that played into an under estimation of the US ability leading up to the Battle of Midway. In addition, the ability of the US to break the Japanese codes and how that turned the tides in the US favor was very interesting. I didn't realize that the unsung heros of the Battle of Midway were the code breakers that set up the US forces to accomplish what they did.

What does Grover Gardner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Honestly, I don't usually take the time to read books right now, but I have plenty of time during commutes to listen to books. This story did not require acting or presenting various dialects. It required a serious tone as it was a serious set of circumstances. In that endeavor, this was a perfect presentation by the reader.

Intended for younger teens, it is still a fun time for adults...a clever take on Alice in Wonderland.
