"Dark!"
I was hooked the whole time. Incredibly dark-just when you think it can't get any worse, another level of horror occurs. Good until the very last minute, I will be starting the next book in the series today.
"Ugh."
I hated myself for not just stopping. "Seriously", "you've got to be kidding me", "unbelievable"-all words I uttered out loud more than once while listening to this. I had to laugh at the ridiculousness of it. The narration and effects were horrendous! The descriptions of the museum were the only redeeming qualities. Of course, in the last 10 minutes they throw in a tidbit to make you curious about the next book. I wanted to find a series to get into, and see reviews that some prefer later books in the series. I think I'll have to shop around before I give in to my curiosity and continue the series.
"My favorite Flynn so far."
Interesting story and main character. Saw alot of it coming and the end seemed rushed compared to the rest of the novel, but my favorite GF so far.
"Favorite?"
Predictable, but I liked the way the story developed. That Dublin Murder Squad would be unmanned if a (remotely) normal childhood was an employment requirement.
"Just can't stop myself."
The third one....again some questionable premises, and unlikeable characters but maybe that's her hook. I still keep listening.
"Ehh..Guilty Pleasure."
Ridiculous premise, but I enjoyed it anyway. I really felt like I was there-great character and location details.
"Worth it."
I have subsequently listened to all of the series. TF does a great job making you want to punch the "protagonist" in the throat.
"Love to hate them."
Very entertaining story-implausible but I couldn't get enough of it. My 2nd Gillian Flynn listen(Dark Places****), she sure does awful people well.
"Incredible!"
I joined Audible specifically to get this book. I had attempted to read it for several years but just couldn't commit. I found it very easy to listen to, and would catch up on the footnotes every couple of days. Some of the footnotes were critical to me following the story, so I am glad I took the time to read them.
This book was above my head, and I am sure I missed things that I might catch if I listen again (and again), but the story and characters are so complex I LOVED what I did get. The detail, the description of addiction and recovery-amazing!
Probably the most beautiful book I have ever been exposed to, I can't recommend it enough.
RIP DFW.
-I'd also like to mention that I thought the narrator was awesome. Character distinction without distraction-bravo!
"Good"
Interesting characters and story. I have since listened to all Gillian Flynn's books and appreciate her take on damaged human beings.
