You've got to love the guy. He does put his "money where his mouth is". Quite forthright in his views, and, who knows? Perhaps there are grains of truth in his theories.
Informative and well written. My grandmother told stories of and believed in the faith-healers, seances and spiritualism that were commonplace in her youth (US during the late 1800's and early 1900's). These were not "out there", but commonly held beliefs in the lower middle class of America during this time.
Boring. Pedagogical. Uninspired. Haven't made it to the end of the book as when I fall asleep, the sound of my head hitting the desk wakes me up, and I turn it off.
A guru for the younger among us, a potty mouth for those who are more mature. I liked it, snickered and giggled, but how the standards of comedy have changed. Not for young teens.
A rating of 2.5 -- a little below average book. Plot was predictable, and there was a lack of exposition. Dialog seemed stilted. Still, the narration was nice.
Poor selection. No introduction. Only taped recorded testimony. There is a hideous echo too. There is no text to bridge interviews. Tape quality ranks from abysmal to poor. (Note: I have only listened to 40 minutes but it was such an effort with the audio quality that I got a bad headache.) With so many other excellent audible offerings, keep your wallet closed on this one.
I'm an American and unfamiliar with Mr. Bryson's works. He is a gem! I loved the book. The sound of Mr. Matthews' narration sounds like John Cleese to me. Kept waiting to hear the "little machine" going "b-r-in-ggggg", and smiled all the time I was listening!
Break out the aspirin bottle. This is that kind of work. Can the author spell hubris? The narration is quite good.
He spent the first 35 minutes telling how privledged he had been and how wonderful he was. It made me feel unhappy. Hard to listen to his message after that.
I love the book, but you can "skim" over a lot of the pages during modern times to the portion where she time travels. The dynamic and wonderful portion, is Kivrin's journey in the 14th century. You feel as if you are with her experiencing. The characters in the past are unforgettable.
