Beneath Lausanne Cathedral, in Switzerland, there is a secret buried before time began.... Marc Rochat watches over the city at night from the belfry of the cathedral. He lives in a world of shadows and "beforetimes" and imaginary beings. Katherine Taylor, call girl and daydreamer, is about to discover that her real-life fairy tale is too good to be true. Jay Harper, private detective, wakes up in a crummy hotel room with no memory. Three lives, one purpose: save what's left of paradise before all hell breaks loose.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I listened to this as an audiobook and the narration was 1st class. The story was unique in that it contained multiple genres - detective mystery, supernatural, religious and perhaps a bit of satire - and consequently unexpected plot development. I was sorry when the book ended.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There could only be one favourite character and he would be Marc Rochas, the bell-keeper. Marc is the epitome of innocence, guilelessness, gentleness and love who also has a very vivid imagination. The story plays with our concepts of good and evil with Marc taking the leading role as 'good.'

What does Jonathan Davis bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

Jonathan Davis' narration is excellent - five star. He quickly draws you into the book and before long you are really not aware that someone is reading a book to you, as you, the narrator, and the story become intrinsically one.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, all of the above. The book was well designed to bring out just about every emotion a human being can experience.

    Any additional comments?

    Listen to it soon.

The world is stunned when four commuter planes crash within hours of each other on different continents. Facing global panic, officials are under pressure to find the causes. With terrorist attacks and environmental factors ruled out, there doesn't appear to be a correlation between the crashes, except that in three of the four air disasters a child survivor is found in the wreckage.

They fight without conscience or remorse. Their only job is to kill. They are the most ruthless enemy we have ever faced. And they are one millionth our size. When Dr. Lou Welcome fills in last minute for his boss at a national conference in Atlanta he brings along his best friend, Cap Duncan. But an accident turns tragic when Cap injures his leg while running. Surgeons manage to save the leg, but the open wound is the perfect breeding ground for a deadly microbial invader committed to eating Cap alive from the inside out.

Certainly not a literary masterpiece, in fact, far from it. I reads along at a fair pace and is written in a straight forward workmanlike manner, which does not excite one for its skills in prose. Nevertheless, it was an OK book in it's genre, without getting too excited about it. I occasionally enjoy these types of semi medical sci fi stories about killer bugs, and if you do too, you will probably enjoy this well performed book as well.

The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

I really can't say it any better than the publishers review. The writing was superb and eloquently read by Edoardo Ballerini, an excellent choice to perform this work. I thoroughly enjoyed the entangled plot between characters and times, and yet; would I say it was the best book I've read, or the most engrossing book: no, it was not. If you enjoy wonderful writing, interesting characters and the interplay and relationships between humans beings, then you will love this book. I highly recommend it.

hate to say it but JT is getting formulaic....a sprinkle of this and a spoonful of that, stir up the plot and you've got another JT Elliison romantic mystery thriller....; not too hot, not too cold, but just right for those who adore her.

The killer's methods are terrifying. He stalks the basements and underground passageways of New York City. He tattoos his victims' flesh with cryptic messages, using a tattoo gun loaded with poison, resulting in an agonizing, painful death. When a connection is made to the Bone Collector - the serial killer who terrorized New York more than a decade ago - Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are immediately drawn into the case.

Nor even Edoardo Ballerini's mellifluous voice could raise the temperature of the story told in this book beyond tepid. It was not so bad I abandoned it, but I found myself drifting off and away on a number of occasions but was able to pick the thread up easily again, which is not always a good sign. In really good books, if this happens, I have to replay, as I don't want to miss a word. Unfortunately, Deaver's books, like so many other writers of series, have become formulaic. I had guessed the 'perp' by the first 1/3 of the book and the rest was spent wondering what the denouement would bring and, for me, there was not a lot to get excited about. It wasn't badly written, it was a book that had just been written in a pretty ordinary and predictable way; no interesting writing here, if you're looking for a little, as least, literary skill. If you've read the Bone Collector don't waste a credit on this book, just read the Bone Collector again.

Yes, Daniel Palmer is developing along nicely as a thriller writer; just a little bit more investment in the development of believable and intelligent heros would be a welcome move. With the exception of Gage Dekker, all the other character remained ghostlike and underdeveloped. Upon reflection, perhaps this was intentional and the writer just wanted the whole story to be totally directed by his main character, Gage. If this, indeed was the case, then Gage's character needed further development and given more insight, less hysteria, and more intelligence than the present character appears to have. Having said that, I enjoyed the book thoroughly. The suspense was strung like a tight wire throughout the book and it was hard to put down. Peter Berkrot's performance as Gage Dekker was excellent and he brought the character to life. I look forward to Daniel Palmer's next book.

Not my normal genre which is mystery/thriller/suspense. I suppose this book might weakly fall into the mystery category but is really romance built around a tepid mystery plot. I read the first in the series after reading a pleasing review. Sometimes I like something light & refreshing between engrossing thrillers, and this series meets with these needs most satisfactorily. it is like having a gelato on a hot summer's day.

The main character, Francesca, is a refreshing delight, a blue-stocking, a swat and a supposed intellectual! She is also a self made detective and, not quite like Miss Marple, manages to solve murders without too much fuss but with quite a lot of sexual stirring in not only herself but also in Bragg, the Police Commissioner with whom she is in love, her sister, Connie, who has a wayward husband and in Bragg's brother Hart with one of his socially unacceptable paramours. There follows quite a lot of erotic love making and for those who enjoy this sort of thing it will sure put a spring into your step. If you like gelato on hot days and want to put a spring into your step, buy this !!

From the outside, Carter Tomlin's life looked perfect: a big house, pretty wife, two kids - a St. Paul success story. But Tomlin has a secret. He's lost his job, the bills are mounting, and that perfect life is hanging by a thread. Desperate, he robs a bank. Then he robs another. As the red flags start to go up, FBI Special Agent Carla Windermere homes in on Tomlin from one direction, while Minnesota state investigator Kirk Stevens picks up the trail from another.

I have only read another book by this author and this book is along the same lines. He may, in fact, have written bits of it when he wrote The Professionals, the other book of his I've read. I must say I enjoyed the Professionals more because the idea and the story was fresh to me when I read it. The writer appeared to struggle with this book a bit and it parts, I found myself losing concentration. The plot is highly improbable but in most stories this is not important if the tale is told well. I can't really criticize the writing in this book but I certainly thought about the improbability of the story line many times throughout the reading. Ballerini's reading for me saved the book completely; he's so, so good. I will try another Laukkanen just to see whether The Professionals wasn't just a flash in the pan, but hope it's not more bank robberies.

from page 1, this was a winner for me. It sucked me right in and kept me enthralled until I finished it in 2 listening sessions. Lisa Unger has a magic ability to create a wonderful suspenseful tension in her writing that keeps you 'turning pages' well into the night. The narrators were nothing short of brilliant, especially the voice of 'Lana.' The two perfmormers brought the book to life and made the story perfectly believable. Can't recommend this book more highly for those who love good character development and psychological suspense. Can't wait for Unger's next delectable treat!
