  • Drop Dead Healthy: One Man's Humble Quest for Bodily Perfection

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 10 mins)

    • Narrated By A. J. Jacobs

    Story
    (360)

    A. J. Jacobs tackles his most challenging experiment yet: a yearlong mission to radically improve every element of his body and mind - from his brain to his fingertips to his abs. First, he had to tackle a complicated web of diet and exercise advice, most which is nonsensical, unproven, and contradictory. Second, he had to consult a team of medical advisers. And finally, he had to subject himself, over the course of two years, to a grueling regimen of exercises and a range of diets and nutritional plans.

I like all of his books and this was the first one I listened to. I enjoyed it very much and the content was very good. Basic but still with good information. I am now considering listening to other books of Jacobs.

Full of things we may know but have not articulated to ourselves, Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart is a gentle and generous alternative to the trial-and-error learning that makes wisdom such an expensive commodity. For everyone who feels a sense of urgency that the clock ticks and still we aren't the person we'd like to be, it offers solace, guidance, and hope.

Would you listen to Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart again? Why?

I don't think I can ever listen to this again and not because of the content. There is a noise on this that is so distracting I can't take it. It seems to be the readers mouth noises of swallowing and moisture. I can barely truly listen to it with these noises. I so far have only tried it with headsets so maybe on large speakers it will be better.

How could the performance have been better?

    Edit out these noises.

    Any additional comments?

I did not finish this book. The content seems very good but these noises are just too much. Perhaps I am being overly sensitive but what can I say? I can't stop hearing this noise.

  • Inside Scientology: The Story of America's Most Secretive Religion

    Story
    (929)

Scientology, created in 1954 by a prolific sci-fi writer named L. Ron Hubbard, claims to be the world's fastest-growing religion, with millions of members around the world and huge financial holdings. Its celebrity believers keep its profile high, and its teams of "volunteer ministers" offer aid at disaster sites such as Haiti and the World Trade Center. But Scientology is also a notably closed faith, harassing journalists and others through litigation and intimidation, even infiltrating the highest levels of government to further its goals.

What did you love best about Inside Scientology?

I found this an interesting book and interesting to get the Hubbard background.

What other book might you compare Inside Scientology to and why?

Under the banner of god, I think is the name of the book I would compare this to.

What about Stephen Hoye’s performance did you like?

    I did like his reading.

If you could give Inside Scientology a new subtitle, what would it be?

What are you getting into exactly?

    Any additional comments?

I was unsure about this but I am glad to have listened.

  • Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army

    Story
    (145)

A largely untold facet of the war on terror is the widespread outsourcing of military tasks to private mercenary companies. Accountable neither to the citizenry nor to standard military legal codes, these largely unregulated corporate armies are being entrusted with ever-greater responsibilities on behalf of the nation.

Would you listen to Blackwater again? Why?

Probably not. Took me a while to get used to the reader

What three words best describe Tom Weiner’s performance?

The Reason I had to get used this style is probably because the last book I listened to the reader was so different and I really liked him and I just had to get used to Tom's different style.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Small but powerful army

    Any additional comments?

    Great information and very eye-opening

Last summer, The New Yorker published chef Anthony Bourdain's shocking, "Don't Eat Before Reading This." Now, the author uses the same "take-no-prisoners" attitude in his deliciously funny and shockingly delectable audiobook, sure to delight gourmands and philistines alike.

Would you listen to Kitchen Confidential again? Why?

I do want to listen again. Mixed within the great stories are a few tips that I want to take advantage of.

What other book might you compare Kitchen Confidential to and why?

Junky is my favorite book I ever heard because the author read it and this book is so fun to listen to since Bourdain reads it.

What does Anthony Bourdain bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It is less like he is reading and more like he is just sitting and talking to you and telling you his crazy stories.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Be careful of when and where you eat

    Any additional comments?

I just really enjoyed this book.
