  • Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy: A Righteous Gentile vs. the Third Reich

A definitive, deeply moving narrative, Bonhoeffer is a story of moral courage in the face of the monstrous evil that was Nazism. After discovering the fire of true faith in a Harlem church, Bonhoeffer returned to Germany and became one of the first to speak out against Hitler. As a double agent, he joined the plot to assassinate the Führer and was hanged in Flossenbürg concentration camp at age thirty-nine. Since his death, Bonhoeffer has grown to be one of the most fascinating, complex figures of the twentieth century.

    Any additional comments?

WAY out of my normal interest in books, but it was time well spent. Interesting and educational read. If you have some free time on your hands, you could spend it in a lot less entertaining and informative ways than reading this book. It is educational and thought provoking on many levels. I suspect that most will find it interesting primarily from historical, religious and spiritual perspectives. I found myself alternately being bored and then needing to look for more references in the first 1/3 or so. After that, things moved much more quickly. It was interesting to me learning more about the German Church’s complicity in Hitler’s rise and a small group of men’s internal and external struggles in trying to bring him down as part of Valkyrie.

Having inspired a classic film and Broadway play, The Caine Mutiny is Herman Wouk's boldly dramatic, brilliantly entertaining novel of life—and mutiny—on a Navy warship in the Pacific theater. It was immediately embraced upon its original publication as one of the first serious works of American fiction to grapple with the moral complexities and the human consequences of the Second World War. In the intervening half century, this gripping story has become a perennial favorite, selling millions throughout the world, and claiming the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

The only time I was enthused is one small portion of the trial itself. Unfortunately, that was about one hour of the third part of 3 eight hour parts.

Two armed men board a 727 that has been all but forgotten at an airfield in Angola. Hijacking the jet, they then slit the throat of the lone crew and fly to parts unknown. The consternation is immediate, as the CIA, FBI, and other agencies race to find out what happened, in the process elbowing one another in the sides a little too vigorously. Fed up, the president of the United States turns to an outside investigator to determine the truth.

I got hooked on Griffin many years ago with the brotherhood war series. This made me miss that series just that much more. Great read can't wait to read the next one.

One day in 1957, in the third-grade classroom of St. Brigid's parochial school, an exasperated Sister Mary Lurana bent over a restless young William O'Reilly and said, "William, you are a bold, fresh piece of humanity." Little did she know that she was, early in his career as a troublemaker, defining the essence of Bill O'Reilly and providing him with the title of his brash and entertaining issues-based memoir.

If you are a fan of O'Reilly, maybe this one would be worth your time. There are some good tidbits thrown in there, but it is mostly about his childhood and "why he is the way he is." Ehhhh.... Okay.
