  • Beyond Boundaries: The New Neuroscience of Connecting Brains with Machines - and How It Will Change Our Lives

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 40 mins)
    • By Miguel Nicolelis
    • Narrated By Patrick Egan
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Imagine living in a world where people use their computers, drive their cars, and communicate with one another simply by thinking. In this stunning and inspiring work, Duke University neuroscientist Miguel Nicolelis shares his revolutionary insights into how the brain creates thought and the human sense of self - and how this might be augmented by machines, so that the entire universe will be within our reach.

Lynn says: "The Lame Will Walk"
    "Narrator painfull to listen to!"
Would you try another book from Miguel Nicolelis and/or Patrick Egan?

Miguel, may be a genius, however, I'll have to actually read this book in paper or digital format. Patrick Egan's narration was painful for me to listen to. Usually I can find some redeeming value in even the most challenging narrator, but in this case I had to stop listening.

Has Beyond Boundaries turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No, I love this genre

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Dry, over enunciated, and a bit pompous, are a few adjectives I'd use to describe the narration

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Beyond Boundaries?

Couldn't get past the first narrated chapter. I'll let you know after I read the book.

    Any additional comments?

    What more can I say?

  • Geekomancy

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 20 mins)
    • By Michael R. Underwood
    • Narrated By Julia Farhat
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Ree Reyes’s life was easier when all she had to worry about was scraping together tips from her gig as a barista and comic shop slave to pursue her ambitions as a screenwriter. When a scruffy-looking guy storms into the shop looking for a comic like his life depends on it, Ree writes it off as just another day in the land of the geeks. Until a gigantic “BOOM!” echoes from the alley a minute later, and Ree follows the rabbit hole down into her town’s magical flip-side.

Tracey says: "Only geeks need apply!"
"Did anyone actually listen to this befor releasing"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Using a narrator that was capable of producing sounds less like fingernails on a chalk board, for a start.

Would you ever listen to anything by Michael R. Underwood again?

    I'd definitely pre-listen, first

Would you be willing to try another one of Julia Farhat’s performances?

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Geekomancy?

All references to the Gamers skill / power rankings. --- very tedious

    Any additional comments?

  • A Feast for Crows: A Song of Ice and Fire, Book IV

    • UNABRIDGED (31 hrs and 10 mins)
    • By George R. R. Martin
    • Narrated By John Lee

It is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces, some familiar, others only just appearing, are seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead.

    Aaron says: "No Roy Dotrice"
    "Roy Dotrice Please !!!"

WHY would they change the narrator? A potentially wonderful continuation of the best Three books I've listened to turned into something awkward, and painful to listen to. A waste of recording effort.

Please --- Please re-produce this audio-book with Roy Dotrice as the narrator.

    I'll Read it on Kindle

  • The Delphinus Chronicles

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 22 mins)
    • By R.G. Roane
    • Narrated By Helen Lisanti

Students at a small college in Southern California program their supercomputer to learn language, but the school is adjacent to an aquatic amusement park and the computer mistakenly learns to communicate with the world's dolphin population. The dolphins ultimately reveal explosive information about the true origins of mankind, which falls into the wrong hands and sets off a chain of events that threatens to unravel society as we know it.

    Janet says: "Awful Narration"
    "Good Idea, Poor Execution"

I was intregued by the idea of the book, but dissapointed by the execution. I expect that a writer should have at least a passing understanding of Dolphin Biology and history, and enough computer knowledge to avoid simple input / output / operation errors and incosistencies.

Plot and character development were weak, to the point that I had to check if I was listening the abridged version. Listening to the narrator proved a challange, as well. While her voice and Brittish accent were delightful, and would have worked perfectly with a Dianna Gabeldon or Patrick O'Brian novel, the accent just did not fit with a story staged primarily in Southern California.

A good idea that could have been a great book with a little more research, and more thorough plot development.
