Very early, 4:45, on a bitterly cold Minnesota morning, three big men burst through the door of a hospital pharmacy, duct-tape the hands, feet, mouth, and eyes of two pharmacy workers, and clean the place out. But then things swiftly go bad, one of the workers dies, and the robbers hustle out to their truck-and find themselves for just one second face-to-face with a blond woman in the garage: Weather Karkinnen, surgeon, wife of an investigator named Lucas Davenport.

Would you listen to Storm Prey again? Why?

Yes. It is a good book overall, but not the best Prey book. As an investigator Lucas missed asking two obvious questions and it drove me nuts thru the book. If those questions had been asked and answered when they should have been, I feel the book could have gone a much different direction and been far more exciting. No spoilers here but they were follow up questions that I think any investigator would definitely ask.

Would you recommend Storm Prey to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes. The whole series is wonderful. But not every book can be a 5 star.

Did Richard Ferrone do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes. The first few books I heard him narrate I had a hard time with his 'gravelly' voice but now I like it. Gritty for the tough investigator.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Drugs, thugs and questions that need answers.

    Any additional comments?

I was a bit disappointed with this book. At the exact moment the first obvious follow up question wasn't asked I wanted to stop listening. Mr Sandford, you are better than this. There was no build up of tension, it was a logical book with no surprises. If that first question had been asked, it could have led to a kidnapping and much more tension and excitement. I love Lucas but he was not a stellar investigator in this book.

I force myself to look at the face in the photo, into her slightly smudged features, and I can't bring myself to move. Olivia Shaw could be my mirror image, rewound to 13 years ago. I've spent a long time peering into the faces of girls on missing posters, wondering which one replaced me in that basement. But they were never quite the right age, with the right look, in the right circumstances. Until Olivia Shaw, missing for one week tomorrow.

    Story

The story is told in small tidbits of information, going between what is happening and what did happen. I kept waiting for one chapter that would tell me the story of "what happened" and I never got it. I think the author missed something big there--it could have created the much needed suspense in the story. As for what "is happening", there are many missed areas where the author apparently leaves it for the reader to fill in the blanks and I just got tired of doing that. I saw reviews that said there was a big twist at the end, so I stuck it out and finished the book but I wouldn't call it a twist. I'd call it almost predictable. There are only so many characters in the book so you can only have one or two people be the bad guy.

    The narrator was fantastic.

Would you consider the audio edition of Stillhouse Lake to be better than the print version?

I had a hard time "bonding" with the narrator at first but soon came to realize that she was indeed reading the book in a voice type that I would believe Gwen would use.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Stillhouse Lake?

When I realized just who Gwen could trust and who she couldn't. First I was surprised then I became sympathetic for her and couldn't wait till she figured it out for herself.

What does Emily Sutton-Smith bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She starts out narrating in a dry, monotone voice. I had difficulty with it and almost gave up on the book. I am glad I didn't because the voice of Gwen changes subtly thru the story and becomes exactly what it needs to be.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I read many true crime books and mystery books. I have NEVER stopped to think about how the spouse or loved one of a convicted murderer would feel; what their life would be like after the perpetrator is caught and convicted. It was a completely eye opening realization and it led to much thought and contemplation.

    Any additional comments?

I had never read anything by this author and this book was on sale so I thought I'd give it a try. I was not disappointed! I was very excited to see there is a book 2 in the series coming in a few months.

Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Hollywood homicide detective Petra Connor has helped psychologist Alex Delaware crack tough cases in the past. And in Jonathan Kellerman's New York Times best seller Billy Straight, she took the lead in the desperate hunt for a teenage runaway stalked by a vengeful murderer. Now the complex and wryly compassionate Petra is once again at the center of the action, in a novel of cunning twists and page-turning suspense.

Amos Decker witnesses a murder just outside FBI headquarters. A man shoots a woman execution style on a crowded sidewalk, then turns the gun on himself. Even with Decker's extraordinary powers of observation and deduction, the killing is baffling. Decker and his team can find absolutely no connection between the shooter - a family man with a successful consulting business - and his victim, a schoolteacher.

Would you recommend The Fix to your friends? Why or why not?

I would not recommend The Fix. I was enjoying the book until about 2/3 the way through and then it seemed to just run off the rails and go in a direction I found unbelievable and not entertaining at all.

Did Kyf Brewer and Orlagh Cassidy do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Kyf Brewer 'may' be reading the book with a tone to indicate Decker's almost autistic interaction with those around him but it is very annoying and difficult to listen to. Some times I feel like he is almost yelling his part of the story; or exaggerating the tone he is trying to convey. Orlagh does a great job however.

    Any additional comments?

I love the character of Amos Decker but this book was disappointing in so many ways. Kyf Brewer needs to read in a softer and less abrupt way, the story had way too many twists and turns--it lost me after about the 3rd one. I rarely want to quit reading a book once I start so I did complete this book but I did not enjoy it.

Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.
