Stephen R. Donaldson is an interesting author. I generally have to read his books with a dictionary beside me. I suppose this story would be labelled a fantasy. It takes a while to build and the young characters are quite immature from the beginning and so indecisive. By the end of the Mordant's Need, however, you are anxiously ready for the second part.
First, the reader, Bob Thomley is excellent. Second, Poe is strange. If one is not familiar with Poe other than some of his popular works like The Pit and the Pendulum, then you will find these stories weird, crazy and some are hilarious like Toby Dammit. Bob Thomley makes it all work.
This series should be read first before all others. It is an excellent perspective of the War from why it started to its final conclusion.
If not the best, then one of the best books in the series. It read very "Jordanesque" without the minutia of detail on what people were wearing as in earlier episodes.
