Ten years after the publication of Wicked, beloved novelist Gregory Maguire returns at last to the land of Oz. There he introduces us to Liir, an adolescent boy last seen hiding in the shadows of the castle after Dorothy did in the Witch. Bruised, comatose, and left for dead in a gully, Liir is shattered in spirit as well as in form. But he is tended at the Cloister of Saint Glinda by the silent novice called Candle, who wills him back to life with her musical gifts.

The underlying story was good - although it lacked much of the creativity of Wicked - spending a inordinate amount of text belaboring the same issues, sometimes verbatim, rather than letting the storytelling bring the points to life for the author. The most unfortuante aspect of this Audiobook was reader's (author's) inadequate character voices and tendency to emphasize the wrong place in sentences. It frequently made it difficult to follow the story, and I'm still not sure I followed it.

It is the week before Christmas. A tanking economy has prompted Dr. Kay Scarpetta - despite her busy schedule and her continuing work as the senior forensic analyst for CNN - to offer her services pro bono to New York City's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. In no time at all, her increased visibility seems to precipitate a string of unexpected and unsettling events.

    "Bitter and Angry"
    Overall

The pervasive theme for the last 3 books from this series has been angst. In each book the characters have become progressively angrier and the dialogue is more tinged with bitterness. More time is spent describing how angry everyone is than is spent on the actual mystery of the novel. It may be time for Ms. Cornwell to retire Kay Scarpetta and her cohorts.

Corey Grace, a handsome and charismatic Republican senator from Ohio, is locked in a fierce presidential primary battle with the favorite of the party establishment and an influential Christian leader. A decorated Gulf War Air Force pilot known for speaking his mind, Grace's reputation for voting his own conscience rather than the party line - together with his growing romance with an African-American movie star - has earned him a reputation as a maverick and an iconoclast.

After listening to half the book there appeared to be no real story to sink your teeth into, and I gave up caring what happened to the characters, and stopped listening.
