When a 15-year-old girl shows up to plead with Elvis to find her errant father, his first impulse is to hand the case over to Social Services. But he sees how hard the kid is working to keep her two siblings together and afloat. The father sounds like an angel; the case should be a cinch. But as Elvis investigates, he finds the dad seems to be a mover in the criminal underworld who is on the verge of a grand scheme.

This was my 8th Elvis Cole book on Audible. Obviously I really enjoy the series.

After nearly 250 Audible books, this is the first listen that has prompted me to write a review.

While the narrator does a good job with most characters, his voice is so wrong for Elvis that he distracts and ruins an otherwise good story. He would be better suited for the first person voice of Peter Pan than the quirky but tough Elvis Cole.

I have listened to all of the Gabriel Allon series and really enjoyed them. So it was with some anticipation that I decided to listen to Mark of the Assassin. What a total disappointment.

The plot, characters, secret relationships, and motives were all beyond anything that even the most loony of conspiracy nuts could conjure. Capping these were the predictable stereotyping of political parties and religion.

I could not really engage with any of the characters on either side. In fact, half way through the book I was writing a sequel in my mind... “A Bullet for Elizabeth”. Her self centered and self-important persona was only made more annoying by her constant whining. I was starting to feel sorry for Michael but then realized that they really deserved each other.

Then there were the somewhat random and contrived sex scenes that added nothing to the story. These just seemed to be completing some imagined sex scene quota for books of this genre.

What was most peculiar was that many of the Gabriel Allon characters appeared in this book... but in name only. None of their descriptions, characteristics, or history bore any resemblance to how they later appeared. I can’t imagine why Silva decided to later use these characters’ names but change everything else about them.

If this had been my first Silva book, it would have been my last. Thankfully it was not.
