Born in a South Africa divided by racism and hatred, this one small boy will come to lead all the tribes of Africa. Through enduring friendships with Hymie and Gideon, Peekay gains the strength he needs to win out. And in a final conflict with his childhood enemy, the Judge, Peekay will fight to the death for justice.

Bob says: "Compelling story lifted higher by the narration"
"ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS WRITTEN"
    Overall

I have been an audible member for many years. I have to say that this book is one of the best books that I have ever listened to. Tandia, the second book in the sequel is equally as good. I only wish that Courtenay would have written another book to follow the life of Tandia. This was a story that should have been a trilogy. Humphrey Bower brought the story to life. He is truly an amazing narrator.

It did not disappoint. Once again Diana proved to be a brilliant author. I can't wait for the next installment of the Voyager saga. Davina Porter brought the book to life with her excellent ability of narration.

The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Kate Chopin’s novel, a landmark work of early feminism, is seen as a pre-cursor to the works of American novelists such as William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway. The upper-class Creole society of New Orleans and the Southern Louisiana coast at the end of the 19th century is brought to audio in a stirring performance by Academy Award-winning actress Kim Basinger.

What disappointed you about The Awakening?

I could only get through a portion of this book because the narrator drove me crazy. She spoke to slowly and nearly whispered through the lines. I will never buy another audio book with Kim Basinger as the narrator.

The four fires in this story are passion, religion, warfare, and fire itself. While there are many more fires that drive the human spirit, love being perhaps the brightest flame of all, it is these four that have moulded us most as Australian people. The four fires give us our sense of place and, for better or for worse, shape our national character.

I wasn't certian that I would fully appreciate this book since it is by an Austrailian author with the story background set in Australia. I can say without reservation that this is one of the best books that I haver ever listened to. The narrater is amazing! It was easy to forget that it was read by a single person because his voice changed with each character. I am sure that this is a book that I will listen to again sometime in the future. Thank you!
