No to Sparks. I think I've enjoyed narrations by Ms. Williams in the past.
Yes, was never interested in "romance" novels, only read it on a whim as a new friend mentioned it.
Not sure it could have been since the writing was so artless.
I can't say. But I would have re-crafted the device of sitting the daughter down and revealing the tryst of 14 years earlier. Felt like a daytime TV series. But hey, this type of writing is not within my realm of experience and the devices may have been intentionally crafted for that audience. I'm the wrong audience, that's all. Won't be seeing the movie.
If you are not looking for fine writing and are willing to settle for artless phrases and worn out and simplistic story telling devices, there IS a story you can relate to. I might compare this ;-) to Annie Dillard's Maytrees, which is full of art but often bloviated. If someone could recommend a middle ground....I suppose I should not have written a review. Sorry.
This would have been a truly excellent story had the author left out his political leanings. Actually ruined the book for me right at the ending.
