"Wonderfull series, well worth it!"
I’m always worried about historical novels…will they get the language right, will they hold true to the themes of the period….but since it was Maya Banks I had to take a shot, and was NOT disappointed! Wonderful story, and series, that made me laugh and made me cry. Couldn’t have asked for more!
"Nothing really happened...."
Sometimes I blame the narrator if a book just falls flat to me, but in this case it was the writing. I feel like someone told the writer “Okay your first book was full of hot scenes, but it was less than 4 hours long, so can you draw out this middle book so we can have a big finish?”
If you asked me what happened in this book I would say…well…Ethan showed his possessive side a bunch, and we learned more about Brynne’s past and why she is skittish…but other than that, and the hot graphic scenes, not so much in 6 hours! It was very much the middle of the story, laying down background information that I guess will be useful in the next book, but not sure.
I will of course buy the third book to find out what happens, but In the future I would link all the books as one book and call it like it is "a serial novel", not independent books. On a side note I did find it amusing that they referenced 50 actually IN this book, not by name of course, but it is clear what book they are referring to, and it made me kind of smile and also kind of confirmed that 50 was the grain of thought behind this book, but it just isn't reaching the mark.
"Is this the next 50, sadly no :-("
This book has many similar elements to 50, the dominant alpha rich man, the girl he can't stay away from and must have, even the you are MINE moment, but as much as people like to bash 50 there was a build up in that story that didn't exist in this one, but for less than 4 hours long what can you expect?
The steamy scenes were steamy and graphic and there was a lot of sexual tension but ultimately everything came pretty easy and I missed the drama, the intensity, the edge of your seat moments...the rooting for the characters to figure it out already you belong with each other!!!!! Most of that was just missing and it left me with the feeling that I missed 8 chapters or so of the chase.
Ultimately my rating is a 3.5, I also feel that due to the length it was too expensive, but I did download book two and will likely finish the series, it's just not what I hoped for.
"Overall I'm not happy, but I want more!"
Okay let's do some other kinds of ratings.
Hot scenes: 10/10, they were descriptive and hotter than hot.
Male lead: 8/10, he's flawed but the best ones are.
Female lead: 5/10, she is wishy washy, has a spine sometimes, other times she is a brainless robot.
Their interaction with each other: 0/10, he treats her like a full on submissive in the bedroom and other places, he commands her bullies her intimidates her even black mails her. Their relationship would be okay if he showed her he cared but instead it is just commanding her without any of the sweetness of a Dom sub relationship, there is no cherish factor.
So yes it was hot, no it was not remotely believable or sweet. He frequently commands her to do outrageous things and then says "go clean yourself up", and no safe word is ever provided or talked about and they do something's where it really should have been provided. They never talk about being submissive he just jumps into full blown command mode and she doesn't have any idea why she is allowing all this.
There is a sequel coming out called castaway, but like this book it is coming out as a series and when it is all done I'm sure audible will get the book, but this book is a cliffhanger and I'm sad to say that I am just hoping that in the next book the male lead shows some sort of adoration.
Overall I am interested in the second book for plot reasons and just hope the tin man finds his heart because there is a line between submissive with adoration and just treating the woman like a combination blow up doll and door mat, and there is way too many door mat moments happening.
"A bit too sweet for me"
If you are looking for a story that is easy going, not much drama or keep you on the edge of your seat biting your nails intensity, with some hot steamy sex then this book is for you.
Personally I like a bit of suspense and drama in my stories and everything seemed to come too easily in this book. I mean there was some turmoil, and potential for disaster, but disaster seemed easily averted and I missed that holding my breath intensity.
So, it was a nice book...just a bit too sweet for me.
"Just what I was looking for!!!"
Powerful alpha male...reluctant strong female lead....can she chink his well honed armour...does she even want to?
Nice hot scenes, WONDERFUL sexual tension, and lovable characters. The narrator was a bit too breathy for me, but didn't ruin anything.
I will be downloading the rest of the series ASAP!
"Very nice!"
Ahhhh, what a nice surprise. I was afraid all the vampire/witch/werewolf talk would make for a confusing universe but there really wasn't a lot of back story mixed in about them. This is the story of a drunken night in Vegas with an Elvis officiant resulting in a barely remembered marriage...fast forward 13 years and when the male lead tries to get divorced papers signed he realizes something is wrong. His estranged wife of 13 years is in a panic because her 12 year old son has been kidnapped. He knew the math added up, but also that she was in a relationship when they wed...is this his kid they are going after, if it was he would move heaven and earth to save that child, but is he his? For that matter, is SHE his?
Nice story, good characters, fast paced, I really liked it.
"Not what I thought it was"
I admit I'm going through a phase right now. I want to read/listen to books about corporate alpha males and the reluctant heroin...that isn't this book. The erotic scenes were okay, but to he honest they lacked some intensity for supposedly being a Dom/Sub thing, even 50 shades was more dramatic. This book also lacked intensity where the plot was concerned and even the big reveal that was eluded to multiple times was just a let down. I compare it to my friend saying she cheated on her diet and giving this big hype and then she reveals she had a life saver...when I'm thinking she had a five course meal!
This is a story about a Dom/sub relationship that went wrong and two years later they see each other...she runs, he chases. In true alpha make style he manipulates the circumstances so she has to talk to him...for various reasons they hash out their misunderstandings and he offers to train her to accept her submissive side, and the story progresses from there complete with predictable things and a villain that had some real potential but they author never took it anywhere, very sad.
Overall this book was okay if you just want to hear about people screwing. I would not recommend this book for anyone who liked 50, or bared to you, or release me, beautiful disaster, or basically any intense book, there is NO intensity in this book....and some people are looking for that too, so if you are then here you go, if not move on!
"Truly enjoyable"
I really did like this book, but it wasn't as good as the first one so I had to demote it down a star to 4. Overall nice story, hot stuff going on, but there was a disjointed part near the end that left me saying "why would you do that!", to the author. So, wasn't as pleased as book 1, didn't hold the exact same magic, but I do love me some alpha male, so it still gets 4 stars.
"Sorry only 3.5 stars for this one"
First let me say I love all Molly Harper books, they are funny and witty and they make me laugh so hard I expect soda to come flying out of my noes if I drink while reading. I will continue to purchase all MH books, but this one did leave me a little flat. I guess it being a series about Jane didn't really work for me because while Jane was hysterical in previous books this book felt more like filler than actual story. With all the wacky stuff in Janes life I find it hard to believe, in the MH world, that she didn't figure out what was going on with her best friend until the end. Then we have the evolving romance between her and Gabriel that kind of forgot to evolve in this book and that was rather annoying. If I run out of MH books in the future I will return to this series but for now I'm laying it down.
"It was mostly filler but still hot!"
I'm glad I only have to wait until July for the third book! What can I say about this book, it was a bridge between book 1 & 3. We learned more about the male lead, he became more adorable, but the female lead actually became less adorable and more flawed. Flawed is good in these types of books but I prefer to see the flaw improve not get worse, so it kind of left a dullness about it that I'm sure book 3 will cure, but still a bad taste to end on.
