  • The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking

The Antidote is a series of journeys among people who share a single, surprising way of thinking about life. What they have in common is a hunch about human psychology: that it’s our constant effort to eliminate the negative that causes us to feel so anxious, insecure, and unhappy. And that there is an alternative "negative path" to happiness and success that involves embracing the things we spend our lives trying to avoid.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

While I like the topic and did enjoy the book, I do wish there was a bit more of concrete examples. This may be my personal preference for the way examples are presented. The author does give numerous examples couched within his stories. Considering how the book began: describing in detail the self-help, motivational industry he is tearing apart a bit, I was hoping for a few more direct examples of Stoics, and even, perhaps some references to additional info.As an example, currently another best seller is the Power of Habit. While a good book in describing stuff that has happened, I was hoping for some direct examples of how to address the power of habit process they describe in the book. Maybe I am old school but I think if I hear a bunch of stories saying, "Look what we're telling you and isn't this great".....Then I believe, that means, the author may have insights into what they have found, works for habits. With The Antidote, the author described a great number of people, situations, etc, that, in my opinion, say, "Look what I discovered and am sharing with you here".....While many of these stories were good, I was looking for some other conclusions and perhaps event eh authors opinion for what I can do to learn more about the topic.I will keep this book and will look for others. Considering I have not found many on this topic I think it is a good read/listen

Would you recommend The Antidote to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes, unless I found a better title on the topic

Would you listen to another book narrated by Oliver Burkeman?

not sure, he is ok. The audio is comfortable to listen to, but the subject may have benefited from another reader, just a bit

Where does The New Rules of Marketing and PR rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

#1 in the Marketing and PR, and Social Media Marketing arena

What did you like best about this story?

It's not A story. Rather it is many stories, hints, tips, and real life examples of how people are improving their marketing and PR using current tools available today

    Any additional comments?

I bought a previous release of David's book years ago that is now tattered, highlighted and well-worn, I was so impressed I bought the audio. When this new edition came out I immediately got it. I am sure that like my previous edition, I will listen to it at least once a month as a refresher.

There are so many things packed in here that I always come away with a few new ideas.

One of the best attributes of The New Rules is this: Instead of so many others writing, "You have to be on Facebook, because it's Facebook"...."You need to be on Twitter, because it's Twitter".....This book talks about real marketing and PR tried and true concepts. Then, the author says, "here are some tools that should help you do this" Then he may mention Twitter, Facebook, a Blog, etc. This is one of the most beneficial things about this book.

Really I shouldn't write this review. I am telling everyone about a secret weapon

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

    No one
    There's better out there
Anyone who likes the 1st half of a book to be worthless.
Anyone who likes listening to an ego-maniac who appears to be laughing at the reader for buying it and giving him a profit

There are about 4 good ideas in this book. I would take the advice the author seems to promote. Don't pay for something if you don't have to. Don't get me wrong, I agree with this to a point. Go to a local book store, buy a cup of coffee, read the last few chapters, they can't be long, then go buy another authors book where you can really learn

What could Timothy Ferriss have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Cut it down to it's core. About 4 pages worth of text

How could the performance have been better?

The 'feel' of the book comes across as talking down to you. I always worry when books try to bring slick initials in to make it seem you're part of the club of having bought the book.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Frustration - I listen to an entire title to give it a fair shake, and see if it is worth it. This is not. I would say go check out Brian Tracy on time management. Check out Warren Bennis on Leadership. Check out any other titles suggested when you click on this one. Then buy one of the other ones.
