Dr. Charlotte Stone sees what others do not. A sought-after expert in criminal pathology, Charlie regularly sits face-to-face with madmen. Obsessed with learning what makes human monsters commit terrible crimes, Charlie desires little else from life - no doubt because when she was 16, she herself survived a serial killer's bloodbath: A man butchered the family of Charlie's friend, then left the girl's body on a seaside boardwalk one week later. Because of the information Charlie gave police, the Boardwalk Killer went underground.

I don't know what it is about the narrator, but I couldn't stay "tuned in" to the book. I suddenly heard "Chapter 13" and realized the last chapter announcement I actually remembered was chapter 8.
The premise for the book was so good I was sure I would love it. Then we bring in the ghost of a serial killer. I actually didn't mind that so much. It was when the serial killer ghost suddenly became the poor misunderstood bad boy who is really a good guy that I started rolling my eyes. When he's being interviewed by the psychiatrist, everything he says is disturbing on every level. And I'm suddenly to believe he is an acceptable love interest? Seriously? Guess I'm not into unhealthy relationships. First of all, he's a GHOST. I no way does that make him an acceptable love interest. Second of all, he's a convicted serial killer. His MO was to attract and pick up women and then kill them. This woman is a psychiatrist who extensively interviewed him, she knows how he lured women to their deaths. And she doesn't see the red flags? She needs more help than all the serial killers she interviewed.
The rest of the story, the tracking of the live serial killer, and her other interactions with ghosts was entertaining. I just couldn't get past her fatal attraction to the dead serial killer.

Shelly Laurenston turns up the heat with two sizzling novellas. Christmas Pride: How come all the good-looking ones are insane? That's what runs through NYPD cop Desiree "Dez" MacDermot's mind the minute she hooks up again with her childhood buddy, Mace Llewellyn. Shaw's Tail: Brendon Shaw, hotel owner and lion shifter, has seen better days. He's been beaten, had a gun to the back of his head, and had to be rescued by a Pack of shape-shifting wolves.

What disappointed you about The Mane Event?

The language. I'm not a prude, and can accept any language in books as long as it is justified. This book seemed to use coarse language as shock value or to titillate. Sorry, I was not titillated, I was turned completely off. Worse than any porn book I've ever seen because it made it seem this is how people really talk to each other.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Get rid of all the F-bombs and other coarse language. Or at least let people know it contains language and graphic language that can offend.

I haven't finished listening to this book, but there is something I just have to say.
The writing, especially the romance, was very juvenile. I rolled my eyes so many times over the romantic thoughts going through the characters' heads I'm surprised I can still see. I kept asking if these were really adults. In checking out the author, I can see that she's an adult. So, why are her characters so immature?
The author also repeats things over and over. Guess what? I'm a reasonably intelligent adult who doesn't need to be bashed over the head with the same details you just mentioned in the last chapter. And the chapter before that. And the paragraph before that.
The narrator did an excellent job. I'm going to search out more books by her.

The story was so-so. Sometimes funny but seemed pointless. However, that could be because the narrator ruined it completely for me. She read the story with a nagging, whiny, irreverent tone that made the characters unlikable. Do they fall in love? Get eaten by werewolves? Live happily ever after? I found I didn't care as long as the woman quit whining into my ears.

I wrote a review about missing chapters and how the unabridged version wasn't quite so unabridged. Then I wrote to Audible about it. They responded within 24 hours to tell me they had been made aware of the problem and had fixed it. After a new download, I now have the complete book.
The book itself is fantastic. I have a tattered paperback copy that I have read repeatedly over the years. Last year I bought a copy for my Kindle. Now I have the audio version.
Don't miss out on this great book.

In I Am Not a Serial Killer, John Wayne Cleaver saved his town from a murderer even more appalling than the serial killers he obsessively studies. But it turns out even demons have friends, and the disappearance of one has brought another to Clayton County. Soon there are new victims for John to work on at the mortuary and a new mystery to solve. But John has tasted death, and the dark nature he used as a weapon - the terrifying persona he calls "Mr. Monster" - might now be using him.

I can't tell whether I like John or fear him, but I just can't stop listening. As soon as it ended I wanted to listen again, but more than that I had to come download the third book. Can't wait to find out what happens next.
For those who listened to the first book, this one has a new narrator. He's much better and grabs you and drags you into the story. Fantastic job!

John works in his family's mortuary and has an obsession with serial killers. He wants to be a good person but fears he is a sociopath, and for years he has suppressed his dark side through a strict system of rules designed to mimic "normal" behavior. Then a demon begins stalking his small town and killing people one by one, and John is forced to give in to his darker nature in order to save them.

    M. Mott says: "Great, if visceral book, terrible narrator."
    "Good book, bad narrator"
    Overall

It's a good thing the story is so good. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to listen to the narrator. Whoever said it sounds like he's doing Unsolved Mysteries is correct. He overly dramatizes mundane scenes, calmly describes graphically dramatic scenes and puts way too much emphasis in all the wrong places.
Five stars for the book. One star for the narrator. Balances out to 3 stars over all.

I read the entire series years ago and wanted to refresh myself in preparation for the newest book coming out this year. Big mistake to get the audios. I forgot that with her books you don't have to refresh yourself. She does it for you. Over and over and OVER again. At least when you read the book you can skip pages to keep from being frustrated over reading something you've already read.

First let me admit that I haven't listened to this completely. I've started it several times. I can't get more than an hour or two into it before I'm bored out of my mind and have to switch to something else to keep from falling asleep. The author starts off saying this is a slapstick comedy, but since I haven't laughed yet, I have to wonder what she was thinking.
