"Soul to Sole to Sold"
What an unexpected journey! It was one of the most uplifting, educational and enjoyable presentations I have listened to in years ... business book or otherwise. Passionate work, company culture and happiness are shared ingredients leading to this business success.
This audio book, particularly as a non-fiction work, listened like a conversation amongst friends. Tony wove the actual voices of people involved with Zappos into the narration. You could feel the emotion in their voices between the spoken words. This was effective in many ways; one it made the listener feel as if he/she was one with the storytelling. Additionally, the team-as-family nature of the company revealed itself readily in this format.
What a rich experience. I am sure this book will be on many awards lists. Love it!
"Young Ladies Need Motivation Too"
Her voice is familiar and loved by many young people. She gives handy bits of advice that teens and young women can certainly understand and use.
Simple advice about true beauty, money and overcoming adversity are shared without brow beating.
I think it is a good mother-daughter or mentor-mentee share. I listened to the whole book to see if it would be appropriate for my tween daughter. I certainly think it is. I am also recommending it to my friends.
"Honest, Human & Inspiring"
This work is an incredible gift to those of us who fret over the mundane. Elizabeth's extraordinary courage in the face of her son's death, cancer, and infidelity is stirring. Her narration in this audio production connects the listener, as if one were sitting by her side as she unravels the events that markedly changed the direction of her life.
"A Superb Reflection"
This author tells a universal story from a Haitian-American point of view - love in the context of life and death. The books reads as if she is telling the story in your living space. Yet, her account of aspects the Haitian-American experience renders thought provoking exchange on what does it mean to be a hyphenated American.
I have read all of Danticat's works with great satisfaction. This tops the list to date!
"The Spiritual - Music and More"
This interview offers an introduction to the African-American spiritual as a musical form. The dialogue between the host and Joe Carter is sprinkled with historical notes that provide the audience with information about the genesis of the music and its various uses.
An important value added to this Audible selection was the accompanying music woven within the conversation. Mr. Carter's voice is melodic, robust and clear. The work was very easy to listen to as a result.
The only enhancement I would like to suggest is that other voices are used along with Mr. Carter's to better capture the manner in which these songs are usually sung. For example, the call and response features of the music would be enriched if others voices came in. Under most situations, even when there is a soloist, the listeners will add their musical responses or oral punctuation. This is part of the form's specialness.
Great for individuals interested in music history, sacred music and/or African-American music.
"Spoken Beauty"
For years I have read and heard several renditions of Dr. Angelou's poem and autobiographical works. Her writing has an incredible way of inhabiting the souls of reader, audience and artist alike. Her work is distinctly cultural and at the same time universally embracing.
This Audible selection is an example of how content delivered in digitized sound can actually give an authentic voice to the artist and the voice that takes up residence in the artist. When I played this entire selection I felt as if I had a private audience with Dr. Angelou. The sung robustness of her musical references in "Pulse of the Morning", the girly glee in her 7 women poem and her sensitive, yet unapologetic, teasing directed at male listeners easily revealed the range of her artistry and wisdom. What a treat!
I intend to include this work as part of a professional series for adults working in children in out-of-school time settings. It is lush with musical, literary, dramatic and cultural gems that can enrich creativity in young people and those who work with them.
Simply beautiful. I can't wait to play it again! C. Travis
