One of America’s most popular authors, Jodi Picoult has earned a reputation for crafting riveting, topical fiction. In House Rules she examines how being different can have dire consequences. Teenager Jacob Hunt has Asperger’s syndrome. A forensic science wizard, he follows his scanner to show up at crime scenes and give law enforcement officials his advice.

I can't understand all the rave reviews. This was the most tedious audio I have ever purchased from Audible. The only reason I hung onto it was hoping that the ending would have some twist instead of the obvious ending that I figured out very early on. One of the most frustrating books I have experienced waiting for something unexpected to happen which never did. One of the most frustrating things was the way the author used numbered lists over and over to illustrate points-frustrating part was that the main character expressed an extreme aversion to anything with even numbers but over and over again these lists were 4, 6, 8 and so on in number and what made it more frustrating that the character counted out each list by saying 1 blah, blah blah, 2 blah, blah blah and so sometimes up to 12 or 14. This is the only book I have purchased in 5 years that I wish I could get a refund for. I'd give it zero if I could. Kept waiting for someone to ask the main character the most obvious question which no one ever did.

In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes. Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

Where does Mr. Mercedes rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the very best of any audible book I have listened to over the past 10 years. Starts fast and keeps up the terror throughout the entire book. Will Patton is the best narrator active today.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Mr. Mercedes?

Can't really explain without it being a spoiler but it has to do with hamburger meat and "Mr. Mercedes'" mother.

    Which scene was your favorite?

There are too many to count.

If you could rename Mr. Mercedes, what would you call it?

    Real terror.

    Any additional comments?

This is so scary because it is completely possible. There simply is no way to tell you how good this book is and what a great job of narrating that Will Patton does.

  • The Glass Rainbow: A Dave Robicheaux Novel

Why we think it’s a great listen: When it comes to author/narrator pairings, nobody tops James Lee Burke and Will Patton in the Robicheaux thrillers. Beloved Burke hero Detective Dave Robicheaux here returns to New Iberia to solve a series of grisly murders. Seven young women in neighboring Jefferson Davis Parish have been brutally murdered. While the crimes have all the telltale signs of a serial killer, the death of Bernadette Latiolais, a high-school honor student, doesn’t fit.

Will Patton has made the Robicheauz novels my very favorites and this volume is my favorite of all of them. Burke once again gave me moments of out loud laughter as I listened to his descriptions of Crete's dialogue especially. As the doom of the ending played itself out I was preparing for the loss of one of my best friends ever but I must telll you that the ending left me more impressed with Burke than I have ever been. The decsriptive prose that Burke uses to describe characters and scenes in this novel were his very best. Some say that these characters are getting too old to hold the reader's interest but maybe because I am fast approaching my 60th birthday, I could not disagree more. this story was better than anything else I have listened to for a long time thanks to both the writing and the narration.
