Twenty-eight florins a month is a huge price to pay for a man to stand between you and the Wild. Twenty-eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders. But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men - or worse, a company of mercenaries - against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder. It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.

The character development was great and i will be looking forward to the next book. For me the strange part was the use of the Catholic Church / Jesus along side demons. Not a big distraction and will still look for next book..

The follow-up to Mark Lawrence' s thrilling debut novel Prince of Thorns, King of Thorns continues the tale of antihero Jorg Ancrath. After wresting back control of his kingdom from those who murdered his family, Jorg sees the land erupt with hundreds of battles fought by lords and petty kings. More daunting still, he faces an enemy many times his own strength. Jorg may not be able to win this battle in a fair fight, but he wields a rage and cunning that just might even the odds.

Still Dark ,,,,Brooding and Violent but a much deeper plot. I like this book a lot better than the first book and i really liked the first.Seemed a bit less harsh with deeper characters.

The back story is great. Builders Sons,, Book of Kirk.. Took me longer than it should have to figure it out :) If you like The First Law books by Joe Abercrombie or The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks you will like these books. I am downloading Emperor of Thorns now.

    I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Author Mark Lawrence has won over audiences everywhere with Prince of Thorns, his exciting debut novel. Nine-year-old Prince Jorg is forced to watch as his mother and brother are slaughtered. Fleeing the palace, Jorg joins a bloodthirsty band of thugs. But he’s determined to take back what’s rightfully his, so he returns to the castle a few years later - unaware of the dark and powerful magic that awaits.

If you are looking for friendly talking dragons, and Happily Ever After this book is NOT for you. Violent, dark and brooding. Reminds me of books by Brent Weeks and Joe Abercrombie. I am downloading the second book now. This one was a bit short for my taste.

This cant be the same author who wrote Mistborne or The Way of Kings. I was expecting a lot more, ,

I only got through a third of it and switched to a different book. Still one of my favorite authors and i am STILL waiting for the next book in Stormlight Archive.

I can not recommend this book.

Sergey and Marina Dyachenko mix dramatic scenes with romance, action and wit, in a style both direct and lyrical. Written with a sure artistic hand, The Scar is the story of a man driven by his own feverish demons to find redemption and the woman who just might save him. Egert is a brash, confident member of the elite guards and an egotistical philanderer. But after he kills an innocent student in a duel, a mysterious man known as “The Wanderer” challenges Egert and slashes his face with his sword, leaving Egert with a scar that comes to symbolize his cowardice.

The book was excellent but i the characters and plot lines i was most interested in were left hanging. My favorite character was killed off at the end of the last book and i almost did not come back. . . I am glad i did, , new characters were deep and pulled me in, , i did keep waiting for more development on the birds. Souls of sacrificed girls were trapped in animated mechanical birds. I thought this was going to be a major part of the second book but instead the author focused on chariot racing and political infighting. At the end of the book there were several pages that tied up loose ends, , i would rather have another book :)

Overall a very good book but still frustrating

I like stories that are not the standard local boy becomes ruler of the world. This story reminded me of Deadwood Showtime (I think) Series. Gritty dirty and interesting. I prefer low magic stories with deep plots. The plot here was a bit predictable but still an excellent story.

Overall very good i will be looking for Joe Abercrombie's next book.
