Just some guy that likes to listen to things that inspire thought. I've grown tired of the insipidness of music and opinion pieces that now pass for "news". Just looking for inspiration and education.

  • The Millionaire Real Estate Investor

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 42 mins)
    • By Gary Keller, Dave Jenks, Jay Papasan
    • Narrated By Cliff Haby

Keller Williams' The Millionaire Real Estate Investor is your handbook to the tried and true financial wealth-building vehicle that rewards patience and perseverance and is available to all: real estate.

You'll learn about the myths about money and investing that hold people back and how to develop the mindset of a millionaire investor; how to develop sound criteria for identifying great real-estate investment opportunities; and more.

    Eric says: "Some good/repetitive"
    "Great book for start-ups"

I have listened to this book now twice and it seems to give some solid information and worksheets. A seasoned real estate investor might find it a bit elementary, but it reinforces some other great concepts that I have taken away from other books and authors... Like Dave Ramsey. One of the quotes I like relates to how complicated real estate investing can be, or doesn't need to be. A loose quote is "Look. Your car is complicated if you break it down to that degree. But you need only turn the key to start using it. Drivers won't need to know how to break open the transmission as a prerequisite to owning a car."

    I think it was great.

  • King Icahn: The Biography of a Renegade Capitalist

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 48 mins)
    • By Mark Stevens
    • Narrated By Mark Stevens

In this dramatic portrait of legendary and, until now, secretive financier Carl Icahn, best-selling business writer Mark Stevens takes us behind the scenes of some of the biggest deals in U.S. corporate history. A fascinating tale with a cast of characters that includes Michael Milken, Ivan Boesky, T. Boone Pickens, Dennis Levine, and most of the other key players of the '70s and '80s takeover era, King Icahn is the first biography of the business buccaneer who changed the course of corporate America.

    Jonathan says: "Terrible Narrator"
    "Very Enjoyable and Interesting"
What made the experience of listening to King Icahn the most enjoyable?

There have been a lot of news items that I've seen over the year that I never had any idea that had to do with Carl Icahn. Listening to the TWA portion was probably my favorite. Like him or hate him, you'll probably have a new view of Mr. Icahn when you finish this book.

    Any additional comments?

If you run a public company, you had better run it right or Carl might take you to task on it.

  • Aftershock: Protect Yourself and Profit in the Next Global Financial Meltdown

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 54 mins)
    • By David Wiedemer, Robert A. Wiedemer, Cindy S. Spitzer
    • Narrated By Christopher Kipiniak

While the "experts" want us to believe that all is well (or will be soon), nothing could be further from the truth. The worldwide financial crisis of 2008 and 2009 was just a sneak preview of what is to come. But for those who act quickly and correctly, there is still time to protect yourself, your family, and your business in the next global money meltdown.

David M. Weprin says: "Interesting, convincing, and well narrated advert."
    "Started out strong"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

While I like a lot of the education that comes with learning how and why the American economy may soon fail, I sorta felt like I was being sold GOLD. Seems like 2/3 of the second part was BUY GOLD, BUY GOLD, BUY GOLD.

If nothing else, the book does make perfect sense on why the economy is about to fail, but I feel like buying gold is somewhat pointless. The strenuous viewpoint on divesting on real estate seems a bit like flawed logic. They also say to sell your home and just rent. If the economy fails, people will need a place to live. Seems like rentals would be a rock-solid industry. Even if they can't pay in cash, it sets up an excellent opportunity to barter.

I liked the book. Not sure if it'll be as doom and gloom as the author would like to believe.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

How the American economy has gone wrong.

Did Aftershock inspire you to do anything?

  • The Tao of Warren Buffett

    • UNABRIDGED (2 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By Mary Buffett, David Clark
    • Narrated By Anna Fields
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Following in the tradition of the Tao Te Ching, that ancient Chinese classic text on human nature (as well as more popular interpretations, like the best-selling The Tao of Pooh) comes The Tao of Warren Buffett, a compendium of quotes from America's favorite businessman. Buffett's investment strategies and life philosophies are revealed in this collection of sayings, some of which have never been heard before. Warren Buffett can teach us all a few secrets of success.

Ermilo says: "Nice book of investment wisdom"
"An insight into a value investor"

This audio book was a fascinating look into the ideology of value investing. It changed my outlook on the stock market and helped to make sense of otherwise senseless market swings. If everyone invested like Mr. Buffett, there would be fewer millionaires as there would be fewer losers in the market.

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 50 mins)
    • By Douglas Preston
    • Narrated By Scott Sowers
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The world's biggest supercollider is locked in an Arizona mountain. The Torus was built to unlock the secrets of the very moment of creation: the Big Bang itself. Will the Torus divulge the mysteries of the creation of the universe? Or will it, as some predict, suck the earth into a mini black hole? Or is the Torus a Satanic attempt, as a powerful televangelist decries, to challenge God Almighty on the very throne of heaven?

    carl801 says: "This makes"
    "Entertaining and Interesting"

I drudge through a good many books during my semi-boring workdays. Few books have made the little hairs on my neck stand on end from start to finish.

Excellent twists and turns, great character development and a truly interesting plot line. This book does not bash religion as I have read on a couple of previous reviews, but it does make you think about the birth of one "religion" in particular.

Wonderful story. Hope to see a sequel and/or a screenplay soon.

  • By the Light of the Moon

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 4 mins)
    • By Dean Koontz
    • Narrated By Stephen Lang
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Dylan O'Connor, a gifted young artist, is attacked by a mysterious "doctor" and injected with a strange substance. He is told that he is now a carrier of something that will either kill him...or transform his life. Then he is told that he must flee before the doctor's enemies hunt him down. Stunned, disbelieving, Dylan is turned loose to run for his life - and straight into an adventure that will turn the next 24 hours into an odyssey of terror, mystery, and wondrous discovery.

    Mary S. Murray says: "Superb"
    "Simply Amazing"

While the first 20 chapters are a bit slow to arouse interest in the story, the ensuing 30 or so chapters make it difficult to put down. An excellent book.

  • Quitters, Inc.

    • UNABRIDGED (42 mins)
    • By Stephen King
    • Narrated By Eric Roberts

Dick Morrison's life has has become a nightmare of addictions, filling his days with overeating, overworking, and smoking way too much. When an old friend tells him about a surefire way to quit, hes more than willing to give it a shot. But what Dick doesnt know is that Quitters, Inc. demands a high price from anyone who strays from their rigid rules, like a few volts of electricity for the nearest and dearest, or maybe missing thumb?

Rick says: "A great short story"
    "A great short story"

While always a fan of Steven King, due attention must be given to Eric Roberts for his performance of this book. A great story if you have very little time to invest.

  • How to Win Friends & Influence People

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Dale Carnegie
    • Narrated By Andrew MacMillan
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

You can go after the job you want...and get it! You can take the job you have...and improve it! You can take any situation you're in...and make it work for you!

Ralph says: "This is well worth listening too! Main points are."
    "Humbling and Enlightening"

This book is packed full of, what I would consider, universal truths for interacting with people. There are few books that can convey such a wealth of information that can be used in virtually any setting. For anyone that wants to invest in themselves, surely this is the book for you.
